Writing Samples
I was all busy and shit most of yesterday, so I missed all the reindeer games re: Coltrane's job hunt. A few musings:
It looks like the bloom has come off the rose that is the April-August romance of Coltrane and Paigow.
For a writing sample, I would use anything that had been filed publicly, but still redact it. Refact it in a word processor, not on a paper copy. I also would not hesitate to remove entire paragraphs that might be identifying, but make sure to note their exclusion.
Colrtane, you're a 2002 grad, right? There is nothing wrong with moving, if you're doing it for the right reasons. I am a 2000 grad and moved during Summer 2001 and again (between offices of the same firm) in Summer 2002.
When did you start at your firm? If it was Fall 2002, it will probably be two full years by the time you move anyway, which is fine. The key, though, is making a move that looks good and well thought out. I would not have wanted to move between firms again as soon as I did, but there's certainly nothing wrong with an inter-firm move earlier than your third year. If your move would be to a larger firm, it's even easier to explain.
I'm not sure if Paigow is just busting your balls so that she can gently stroke them soon, mired in DC and unaware how the rest of the world works, or just that clueless. But the days of a move early in an associate's career marking him for years are long over. They've been over since at least the early 90s, when large firms first demonstrated that they would fuck their associates if they had to.
However, seriously consider the "grass is always greener on the other side" issue. I know a lot of people who have made moves with which they were ultimately unhappy. But I was really happy with mine...
