It sounds like part of the effect you noticed probably came from the exfoliation. My experience with facials is that they do a cleansing, then a steaming, then exfoliation, then take of exfolation and maybe clean again, then mask, then more cleaning and moisturizer. It seems like the steaming kind of loosens everything up and then the exfoliation takes off some of the dead stuff on top, exposing new skin that sucks in the moisturizer etc.
Kinda like how at the pedicure place, they soak your feet before scraping at the calluses.
Philosophy has a number of exfoliating products. I have very insensitive skin, and have used the greatest love (I think that's the name) -- the exfoliating stuff that feels not unlike microdermabrasion. You may find that too harsh.
