Actually, it's not necessary to post a message in order to view your new avatar, as it appears in
your user profile as soon as you update it. Since your avatar is updated globally on every one of your previous posts, clicking on the "Last Post" link in your User Profile will show you how your avatar appears in the context of a thread.
