Not Atlanta, Not Charlotte, Still Southern

This is where all the cities with personality and character, and those in Alabama, can be discussed.

So where do the Tidewater, Virginia cities get discussed?

How about this. You tell me what's happening in Tidewater, I'll tell you what's going on in south Louisiana, and then we can both pretend to care.

And we can also say that Paigow sucks, call her a Yankee bitch, and tell her to get her carry her ass back to Greenwich. Just for Fun.

I'm pretty sure that they're not even discussing them in Tidewater.

I strongly suspect that any info from south Louisiana would be way more interesting than things going on in Tidewater. Or maybe all of Virginia for that matter. I think the most interesting legal story in Virginia is that Jerry Falwell is starting a law school at Liberty University - apparently so the Wingnuts who can't meet Regent University's rigorous admission standards have a place to go. Of course, another law school is about the last thing that Virginia gets. There are seven law schools here already and no major legal markets in the state. Unless you consider Northern Virginia to be a major legal market, but I just see it as part of the DC market.

As for Paigow, that would just be inviting trouble. Especially if you also bring Just for Fun into it.

Well, with the Richmond market being so exciting and all who has time to pay attention to Tidewater. Especially when the only "major" recent story is Troutman moving their Norfolk office to Virginia Beach. I guess that Norfolk was just too exciting for them.

Bourbon, Football, and Scarlet

Man, this place is dead - not even discussion of such important things as SEC football and the ACC expansion. Let alone the fact that Jerry Fallwell is starting a law school. I guess the old Greedy South Board is lost and gone forever - okay the board is still there, but the spirit is gone.

Do we need to talk about bourbon to attract posters? Or perhaps a visit from Scarlet O'Hara?

Actual Salary Info

In the off chance that anyone cares, last week's Virginia Lawyers Weekly reports that Wiliams Mullen has raised starting salaries to $86,500 in Richmond and Hampton Roads a princely raise of $1500 over last year's sum of $85,000. They even seem to be adding attorneys - maybe that merger with that Detroit firm actually helped. No word on any improvements in their Northern Virginia and DC offices though.

Also Norfolk's own Wilcox & Savage raised salaries $5000 from $81,000 to $86,000 which other than Hunton & Williams and McGuireWoods is about market for there and Richmond. At least it would be about market if there were enough large firms in Richmond and Hampton Roads to comprise a market. Also no word from Reed Smith who I think may be the actual market leader - at least I'm sure that they match Hunton at $100,000.

Troutman raised salaries $5000 in Hampton Roads to $90,000 - Richmond remains unchanged at that figure.

And down in Roanoke, Gentry Locke raised salaries $1000 to $68,000. Which is actually really good money for Roanoke.

Hiring is pretty much down or steady across the board in VA other than Woods Rodgers (Roanoke), Williams Mullen in Richmond and Northern Virginia, and Troutman Sanders in Hampton Roads.

So here you go: it's both football and lawyers:

Big East legal fees add up for Pitt, others: First four months total about $2.1 million

As a total aside, baltassoc, does Baltimore now have some sort of mandate to destroy whatever historic character that exists in the city? I was just up there recently in the first time in a while and I have to say that Fell's Point is becoming totally unrecognizable. Downtown is losing a lot of historic buildings as well. I can see why the National Trust put Downtown Baltimore on its most endangered list a few years ago.

I fear at the rate Baltimore is going that in a few years it will look and feel as souless as DC. Actually it will probably never get that bad. Maybe Newport News.
