now I now understand why you go, but why do other people not just download films?
 | Cheapness? There are even waiting lists for movies you can rent for $1 at the redbox!

My library is always busy and there are waiting lists for all the good TV series as well as the bestselling books. Trueblood season 3 has a 416 person waiting list for the 30 copies across the system.

ETA: Rec centers are important but -- apart from the idea of DVDs, I can't imagine voting to close the library. Reading is just too important.

My family didn't have much money when I was young but we were all big readers and could get books from the library we couldn't afford to buy.

is it a pride thing, like "I got this the frugal way!" ?
 | I have small children and we're at the library frequently. This is Multnomah County, so there are lots of branches, well used (Portland is the readingest city in the country). Our neighborhood branch is ten blocks from our house, and I pass it any time I go anywhere. So, I get the movies/tv series for free, and I can keep the DVDs for at least three weeks (longer if no one has it on hold, which usually only applies to things that have been out for a while). If there's a movie I just can't wait to see, I see it in the theater.

PS My current checked-out DVDs: The Reader, The Good Wife Season 1, Friday Night Lights Season 5, The Pillars of the Earth miniseries and the RDJ Sherlock Holmes. I just returned Animal Kingdom, and before that The Hangover and Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog (which I liked enough that I bought my own copy, plus the book).

PPS There are a lot of books that are worth reading but not worth buying. No way am I investing in 48 Magic Treehouse series books, when each one takes my kindergartener a half hour to finish. |

Speaking of tv, anyone watch Sherlock on the BBC?* Only 3 two-hour episodes, but it's pretty damn good (well, episodes 1 and 3 are, at least). It manages to be a modern version of Conan Doyle's stories while remaining very true to the characters and stories. Very entertaining and I highly recommend it.

Plus it has Tim from the UK Office playing Watson.

 | Communities need libraries for shelter for the homeless, a destination for old people, and, less sarcastically, Internet access for the poor.

None of that explains why people of means use it as a video store. Except maybe they aren't really people of means or have other financial priorities. |

It's definitely light on the architecture lessons, but I think it had to be in that medium.

I wouldn't say they sexes it up and may actually have toned it down slightly on that front as there is a fair bit in the book (just the first one is covered).

I think the overarching themes may be less prominent than you want but they are there.

Also, Ian mcshane play waleran, which is good. |

 | I too would prioritize rec center funding over free video rental, but not the book and internet access missions of the libraries. Tho, in the big city, someone else decides our priorities for us, so I don't get a choice.

 | Some of us don't live an hour from the library. I live 2 blocks. But even when I lived a 10 minute drive from the library, I got 90% of my books from the library using the online reservation system. I don't see the point in paying for books when I don't have to. And I don't need instant gratification -- If a book comes out that I want to read, I don't mind waiting a few days, a few weeks, or even a few months for it. Why should I spend $30-$40/week on books when I can get the same thing for free? Also, if I had a hard copy of ever book I read, I would have to make bi-monthly trips to Goodwill to keep the books from taking over my house, and that's a pain in the ass.

I don't get movies from the library but that's because they don't give me enough time to watch them after I check them out.
