I usually call them out, although, like you, in a teasing way. It eventually worked.
I was the groomsmen in a buddy's wedding. The wedding was in Chicago, where Cheap Guy groomsman resides. Cheap Guy has a history of bringing nothing to the table and shorting us on bar tabs. Cheap Guy isn't rich, but he definitely isn't poor. Cheap Guy and SO attend the rehearsal dinner and the wedding, which equals two nights of free food, booze and entertainment. Granted, Cheap Guy had to rent a tux. Nevertheless, Cheap Guy gets Bride & Groom a $75 gift. Groom calls him out for being a cheapass, and does so by bcc-ing his other friends on the call-out email. Good times.

Okay. In my younger, poorer days this happened: Went to club with friend and his girlfriend. We order a pitcher of beer and he wants me to split 50/50. Now today I would buy any friend Cristol, or Remy or Bud or whatever, flat out buy it. But, this was when I was poor.
So etiquette- you and friend and friend's SO go out, you shouldn't be expected to split the tab- right? She was drinking some, and she wasn't having sex with me*.
*this isn't about Penske and his wife. When I go out with them, I always buy her drinks.
