Start again at kindergarten, Hank -- that was my point. Then Coltrane jumped in with "yeah, and they won't even toast it." His post suggested a belief that willingness to toast a bagel is a reflection on the establishment's worthiness to sell bagels. If you gotta toast it to make it taste good, you shouldn't be selling that shit in the first place.

Upon reflection, I realize that Coltrane might have meant "since they taste like shit, the least they could do is toast them for you to distract you from the staleness," but I was so worked up about people thinking the proper method of serving a bagel is to toast it that I couldn't see all the possible nuances in his post.

This is my peeve: my local bagel joint, which is actually quite good, toasts bagels by default. You have to request it untoasted. This is simply wrong.
