But the issue with the masters is not with letting women play in the tournament (none have qualified), it's that the club doesn't have female members. It was the same thing with Lee Elder (I think it was)--no black members, but he played in the tournament (and Shoal Creek, and every other club at some point). It does expose some hypocrisy, but it won't resolve the issue. Wie can play, as women have before as guests (including, I think S. D. O'Connor), but they still can't become members.

We know this. But Hootie said they were discussing admitting women years ago, but wouldn't do it unless it was on their own schedule. I would think that if Wie wins the PubLinx, that it would be the perfect time for him to make it public that they have accepted a woman member. He looks like a hero and he can pretend he did it on his own time.
Being allowed to play in the tournament vs. being admitted as a member are clearly two different issues. But a woman playing in a tournment at a course at which she is prohibited from being a member is what really highlights the issue. Isn't that what got the ball rolling for black members?
