Anyone ever read Herta Muller?
The Nobel lauriete that I work with the most has an assistant that signs her e-mails "Assistant to Nobel laureate Dr. so-and-so, Degree, Degree, Degree"

She leaves off the titles that are relevant to his employment and hers.

Really the guys should outpace us by a huge margin considering that 75% of paras are women and 75% of the male paras are gay.*

almost 1- as a homesick young man just moved to DC. and I'm lucky because I can see now that one would have played me straight towards an altar, or at least tried.

but zero, unless quasi-judicial representatives of the Secretary of Commerce count as paralegals.

Nope.

And my paralegal experience is pretty slim. I think my boyfriend helped out with some filing in his stepfather's law practice a few decades ago, but that's about as close as I get.

I'm not sure it's defensive. You posted something saying, in essence, "I don't know shit, but you're all fooling yourselves." So several people have responded.

I was brought up very much not to believe in any "alternative" medicine. I never would have tried the acupuncture if it hadn't been for (1) a good friend pressing it and (2) the threat that I might need another bone graft or maybe lose my leg if the healing didn't pick up. The state of mind with which I approached it really goes against the placebo effect, as does the long, long, long history of this kind of treatment.

In contrast, the chiropractor that I went to during the same period didn't do shit for me.

Only if you think benefiting from a placebo effect is "fooling yourselves."

Honestly, I do not know if a pre-existing belief in effecicacy is required for a placebo effect.

See, that's where you lose me. Lots of beliefs survive for a long time, and survival may say more of the lack of anything better.

Chiropractors are good for adjusting your alignment and not much else. At one point in my 20s, my back was completely out of alignment (to the point where my pelvis was so tilted that my left leg felt like it was longer than my right and my left foot would scuff the ground when I walked). I had severe lower back pain. Could barely move. A few adjustments later and I was as good as new. Of course, I learned how to do the adjustments myself or I'd be going back twice a week for the rest of my life ([old man voice]which is how they getcha[/old man voice]).

Unless this is an orgasm or a damn fine hallucinogenic experience, No Way. Xanax is divine.

In that case, I return to asking you to define "placebo." Because if something is effective, when you have serious doubts that it will be, and it has been effective on many people for a very long time, that seems to me to be the opposite of "placebo," at least in the way you were using it.

And since the definition, per dictionary.com, is "a substance having no pharmacological effect but given merely to satisfy a patient who supposes it to be a medicine," then yeah -- I'm going with the idea that it's "fooling yourself." I'm not sure what you intended the word to mean.

Maybe that was my problem -- my right leg really is longer than my left, it's not just a feeling.

Yeah, my para was not my subordinate either -- I met him at my gym. Although he is 10 years my junior and made for a nice welcome to my late 30s.
