Happy to say that my Twitter feed has been full of progressives saying that what happened to Shor was wrong.

Protesters in Wisconsin last night pulled down a statute of anti-slavery activist who died fighting on the Union side in the Civil War. Do you think they knew? I doubt it. Maybe it's social media, maybe it's Trump, maybe it's pent-up craziness from sheltering in place, but it seems like there is more than the usual amount of craziness out there right now.

But are they saying it non-anonymously, or only through Twitter avatars? Are they publicly risking the wrath, opprobrium, shaming, and calls for their own expulsion or firing for defending Shor? Or are they afraid of their own?

Re: Objectively intelligent.

Hey, remember when Sebby said Barr was a sober, reasonable professional who wouldn’t risk his integrity and would handle the job of AG with the respect and fidelity to the Constitution that the office and Constitution deserve?

Yeah. Still hilarious.

welcome back.

I saw a White Fragility proof! On NextDoor a young (20 maybe) black man posts this long post. Basically he loves our neighborhood, always has felt safe, but also knew that he was on the edge of things going south with the police-

He wrote about a woman and her child walking past his house. He heard the mom comment to her child about the Black Lives Matter sign in his yard- "..... Yes dear, All Lives Matter."

So he wanted to explain to his neighbors. Reading the post, it seemed like something where he really agonized over each word.

Within minutes he started getting replies- white people explaining to HIM what HE should be doing, or telling other white people what they should be doing- then the trolls hit! Eventually he got respectful responses, and most thinking people don't respond on ND, but do read it, so his message hopefully did spread around.

Having TM come back is like when Norm comes back to Cheers. Makes me want my own bar to be a regular at.

Re: Objectively intelligent.

So I never even took a bio course after 10th grade- I know nothing. But today I was reading about Michigan's new case numbers. They are up 50%, from almost 200 a day to over 300. Some increase had to be expected with opening, so that doesn't seem too worrisome. But also I read that the % positive number has been static- so that means the increase is really that more tests are occurring, I think? I know lots of people early on before tests were available that were almost certainly positive, but just shook it off. So increased testing should lead to an increase now, and hopefully control tomorrow as those positives isolate.
But what is most f'ed up to me, lots of math and engineering and 10th grade bio, I have to figure out what the news means myself. Maybe Whitmer is explaining these issues, her conferences are not that highlighted. Ain't nothing out of DC. I did not vote for Whitmer but like her response these months, but someone has to start explaining what shit means. People hear "numbers are up*" without perspective, that ain't good.
*this rant is limited to Michigan, not the states clearly exploding for the first time.

I personally use a pseudonym for most of my tweeting, but I am definitely the exception rather than the rule. I don't get any sense that anyone is pulling their punches for fear of what other people are saying, but not sure what that says.

I love Twitter, but it's a weird place with its own weird dynamics, including shaming. The shaming manifests as politically lefty when it's happening in those circles, but I don't think it's inherently lefty.

eta:

Both Fang and Shor said things that seem reasonably in retrospect but that drew a one-sided, unhappy Twitter mob. Fang does not seem to have suffered any ill effects, other than that it's unpleasant to be the target of a Twitter mob. Shor lost his job. I don't know who Shor is or anything about him, but my conclusion is that he had a bad boss or worked for a badly run organization.
