I attended both public school and private school. I keep in closer contact with my private school friends mostly because (a) I like them, (b) they live in New York and (c) if I were to ever fall out of touch with them, the school has so many alumni events that it's just easier to get back in touch with them (and (d) the pillow fight memories, of course).
This is not to say I don't keep in touch with people from my other highschool. I'm pretty good friends with my first real boyfriend. But he lives a long way away so I don't see him much.
Also very good friends with some people from law school - again, it's convenient - they are in NYC and so am I.
Other good friends that I have here I have met through other friends here and outside interests (my tuesday morning kayaking on the east river club etc).
But the reason I am responding to Atticus is because his thesis is correct at least in my case.
