My three cents:
1) This was apparently Anti-GOP agenda year (again) - as they awarded the two Bush haters the best actor awards - Tim Robbins and Sean Penn (even though he never shows up) and all those awards for that already dated play Angels in America

I speak on behalf of Sean Penn. He NEVER wins major awards, especially if Hollywood has anything to do with it. They always nominate him because he's too good to overlook entirely, but they never let him win. Before Mystic River stated getting nominations, he's had three Oscar nominations, three Golden Globe nominations, two nominations at Cannes (he won for
She's So Lovely, two Independent Spirit awards (he won for
Dead Man Walking, two SAG nominations, four Venice Film Festival awards (he won three, acting for
21 Grams, one for
Hurlyburly, directing for
11'9"01, the other nomination was for directing
The Crossing Guard). They don't like him in Hollywood. He's been too much of a pain in their collective asses for years, and he's never needed them.
His performance in
Mystic River is probably one of the top ten performances of any actor, male or female, that I've ever seen. Russell Crowe (who invited the GOP governor of Texas to his wedding) was damned good, but Penn was better.
