Another middle school moment for me: For a group project we had to make a music video (actually I think we just storyboarded a music video, because I don't remember actually shooting it, and I certainly did not own a video camera in those days) and my group picked this song. One lesson I've taken from this and my later make-a-music-video assignment in Adobe Flash class: If you are asked to make a music video, choose a song that you won't mind listening to nonstop (and with random stops and starts) for a week or more. And if you don't think there is any song that will meet this requirement, you are probably mostly correct.

Jesus. When I was in middle school we drew an antelope on a cave wall.

Re: No Faith in the Moral Standards of the Players as a Group

Can't talk about it with my pregnant wife, but I'm a bit torn up about my co-workers whose baby just died. I'm not close enough to them to know the details, but it's hard to imagine losing a child at 6 months or so.

They are kind, wonderful people but I just can't imagine.

it's a continuous thing- kids die at 2 or 5 or 10 years. And you grieve for the survivors.

Horrible news. Just be there for them as best you can.

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is a group that provides support infant and pregnancy loss and they have some resources and other information on supporting those who have experienced such a terrible loss.

Re: No Faith in the Moral Standards of the Players as a Group

I was in Rio the year before the Olympics. I had a great guide who told me about the "bad old days" when thieves locked arms from the sidewalk to the ocean and walked the beaches, robbing everyone in their path. The doormen at the hotels at Copacabana and Ipanema would warn guest when they should stay off the beach. Even when I was there, locals went to the beach with absolutely nothing except a bathing suit and flip flops. (I really thought the Barra Beach was better, less crowded, in any event. As beautiful a beach as exists in an urban setting.)

Why am I mentioning this? Because the "bad old days" are apparently back. Rio is proposing a tax on tourists, the proceeds of which will go to mugging victims.

Sad. Go there at your peril; and be very, very wary at night.
