They asked where his weed was, but luckily he was clean. apparently they were doing a surveillance on the store. they told him any white person in that neighborhood was buying dope or a cop, which is why they went after him so hard.

But honestly, isn't announcing they are cops the first thing they should do? And maybe they were bluffing, but how are you going to shoot someone you suspect of having bought a small bit of pot?

These guys are out of control?

When the spin machine is done with this one, you'll find just as many people blaming the victim as a we did with Trayvon Martin. This one will be much uglier, however, as the murder took place in broad daylight, with witnesses.

You really need to check out Taibbi's book. His grasp of finance stuff wasn't excellent, which left Griftopia lacking. But he gets the court system and the bureaucratic discrimination against poor and minority defendants. And what's even better is he ties it all to a nasty mindset we've all seen emerging for the past couple decades, but nobody's fully described - this idea that the less fortunate deserve to be "managed" like animals.

He's careful to note, it's not indifference. It's not the "live and let die" libertarian thinking even I often espouse. We're moving into this fucked up mindset that says the less fortunate deserve fewer rights than the rest of us. That if you shoot a few working class or poor kids a year, that's alright -- they weren't "productive" anyway. Only the productive - Mitt's 53% - deserve full rights not be hassled or killed. Fuck the rest. They're holding us productive sorts back. Pen them, search them, shoot a few.

I don't think even Rand would have accepted this sort of aggressive economic discrimination. But that's where we are, and the book really demonstrates the progression-- or regression, as it's probably better described.

We aren't moving into that mindset; it's the cornerstone of our entire society. Remember, when this country was founded, the franchise was limited to free white male property-owners. Our entire system was set up to protect property rights. The Bill of Rights was an afterthought.

We are moving, within the next two generations, into a place where we will be shaken by violent uprisings as people get hungrier and the safety net is unwound. At this stage, it's till possible to turn it around, but I don't see the political will or the social conscience to do it.
