Here's a clue:  sometimes people give effusive compliments to a cook for making something tasty for the simple reason that the cook spent time and energy making the tasty dish for them.  It is as much an acknowledgment of the effort as the result.  Anytime someone** makes you a meal, you should find something to compliment.  They deserve it even if it isn't the best thing you've ever eaten because they made it for you.
 
And a rave on the mashed potatoes simply means they like the taste of them, even if they are just a bowl of heavy fatty cheese.  Why that should make you seethe is beyond comprehension.  My SIL makes a cheesy pineapple side dish that I don't particularly like but several in the family enjoy.  It doesn't bother me at all when they compliment her on those.  I just compliment her on something I do find tasty.

 Ouisie's isn't necessarily swank, just really, really good.  I can't imagine that Wonk doesn't know of it.  It's been around for at least 30 years.  
 
I have hundreds of backup CFS recs if that one doesn't work out, and the Houston Press dedicated an issue on the subject  with the top 25 in the state that Robb Walsh could find . Talk about an contentious letters section the next issue.
