I disagree. The Pink Panther remakes are an abomination. Mean Joe as the anchor of that awesome Steeler defense. Polamalu is the hard nosed, heart and soul of the best defense in the league. He's a throwback. Not sure how mean he is, but I think it's kind of a cool idea keeping that commercial alive and handing it down to another Steeler. Of course, once I see it, I'll probably completely change my mind.

I think it includes the following current bands:

Radiohead
Muse (who know how to use keyboards well and also have seriously kick-ass guitar parts that sound synth-y)
Travis
Coldplay (not a favorite of mine, by any means, but they are definitely part of the genre)
Snow Patrol
Keane
The Bravery
The Killers
The Shins
The Decemberists
Silversun Pickups
She Wants Revenge

The list is nowhere near complete. Probably others like Panic!, Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend fall here too, but I haven't really listened to enough of their stuff to say.

Radiohead and Muse both know how to go hard, and do it well, but they also have plenty of material that puts them in the category and I tend to believe that Radiohead is the band that created the category in the 90's.

Some of the bands cross over with other sounds, but I think they all work in that category.

2 on the Pink Panther remakes.

I hope they don't copy the old commercial exactly. If they change it up a little maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Radiohead is in a category all its own. They can do brit pop, whiny or otherwise, but they are a whole lot more than that.

And Silversun Pickups? Really?

Hm. Okay. I don't know all of these bands, and some of them I actively dislike (e.g., Coldplay) but I think I know where you are going, and I like the Radiohead and the Shins. Although I guess I see more of a whiny commonality than a british one. And a number of other British bands that might be on the fringe of this group (Stone Roses, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, etc.)

The idea of a "current band" is complicated with so many in the genre on hiatus or pursuing temporary projects, so I would add Pulp, Blur, The Verve and Supergrass as being the core of the genre, along with Radiohead. Oh, and Oasis, of course.

I am more annoyed by The Decemberists' pretentiousness than their britpopocity.

And I like them.

I completely forgot about The Verve, although I wouldn't have listed them anyway as I wouldn't claim to like them.

ETA: This topic has reminded me that I have heard very little Radiohead in the last few days of listening to the ipod on shuffle, a problem that has now been corrected.

If we're talking broadly "britpop," I agree, except to again note that Radiohead is much more than that. The original description was "whiny britpop," though, and I wouldn't call those bands whiny. Snotty, maybe.

And I've got nothing against a proper pop song, Brit or otherwise. But American singers who do it with that sad, faux-euro voice bug the shit out of me.

I think Ollie is more bothered by the 80s revival-type bands such as Interpol and The Rapture, which were more heavily influnced by Joy Division, the Smiths, and those other pre-goth bands. Which do suck, by the way. No offense, unless you are going to insist on getting offended by my saying that your favorite genre of music sucks, in which case, what can I do? I suspect you already knew that, however, and continue to not care, so Ollie and I can go to hell. Arctic Monkeys have a different vibe -- a little harder. Less likely to make on want to wear black eyeliner. Vampire Weekend actually has more of an indie/afro-pop influence to them. I like them. Panic! is more like those earlier bands. Don't like them. Yuk. Gross. Anyway, you don't need us or our stupid opinions. You've got soul but you're not a soldier.

Let me just preface this by saying that all of you suck, and your musical tastes suck, and I can't believe people like you are allowed to listen to music. Ok, that said, let me get to my original point: Hi everyone, have a nice Friday.
