What's amusing to me here is that I've confirmed we were talking about totally different subjects - yours, apparently, limited to the singular issue that fewer wealthy people than not-wealthy join the military - and yet, instead of taking the graceful way out of the conflict that I afforded you, you continue to be hot under the collar about...nothing. It's not pretty.

We can keep on exhuming this one for as long as you like. You accused me of calling every poor person, soldier, and car mechanic an idiot. In a normal context, I might patiently explain how you were misinterpreting my statement. In this context, and given your tone, I felt no need to be nice about it. Why you think this is such a big deal is beyond me.

And this would be different from PB business as usual how?
Quote:
Ty said that if you heard the entire transcript that the meaning of Kerry was trying to say was obvious. In other words, a shortened version was being put out there that was intentionally misleading, like a quote taken out of context. I said that I doubt that because if the quote was taken out of context then Kerry, and the Democrat spin machine would be blasting the real transcript everywhere.
Ty was incredulous that I doubted his assertion even though he did not have the "full transcript" to back his story.
|
Actually I did read Ty's initial post on the subject 2 days ago or so. I admit I did not read every post about it thereafter, but as I recall, his inital post was merely that Chris Mathews and Dick Armey were saying it was taken out of context. Just like he reiterated above. I don't think he ever claimed to have inside knowledge of the entire transcript. So, really, if someone found the entire transcript and it showed that generally he was talking about Bush before that 10 second snippet, you would feel better?
Why are you so seemingly mad at Ty for mentioning that a couple of right-wing guys seem to have Kerry's back on this one? Are you at all annoyed with the Rove machine for starting the fire bombing on this misstatement?

it is a basic premise of Farenheit 9/11- it make sense as a joke (once you buy into the premise) to "scare" kids into studying. he has been quite disrespectful (perhaps accurately, but still) about troops in vietnam, why would he be beyond that now?

FWIW, the SO watched either the actual event, or an extended clip, on CNN yesterday and noted that the leadup to the 10 second clip was a litany of Bush one-liners. Her impression was that this stupid-ass joke was supposed to fit into that long litany, and he fucked it up badly.
If you choose to believe that Kerry actually meant to insult troops, be my guest, but FWIW, I don't think it'll do much for public perceptions of your claimed mammoth intelligence.

2. once i realized that this was not what you meant, I constructively pointed out that it seemed what you had intended, and suggested your written advocacy skills might be somewhat low, and further suggested allowing associates to take over all of any future briefing in your client files.
I suppose what i am saying is that nonono could have been more helpful than she was.

Hank's concerned that he can't do the two-mile run unless there's an elementary school along the course for him to take a dump in.

it says you need "clear speech". I end up slurring my words a lot, especially after lunch

Get your head on straight. You came out of the box trying to fight (so nothing from you about my tone, tyvm) and you brought it up again today. Hank's right. And you're far too emotional and prickly to have a clear conversation, so we can leave it at that.

Thank you - this is what I keep noting. The R's are losing elements of their traditional base, especially the fiscally conservative but socially liberal part. There is no place else for these people to go but the Democratic party.
This is the natural long-term outcome of Rovism.
|
A Democratic "correction" is needed, and I say this is a registered libertarian who generally votes moderate Republican. You're dead on the money.
The best result is gridlock, which is what we'll have.

Absent pressing national concern (on the scale of WWII), I would greatly discourage any child from enlisting as a grunt, but if they wanted to do ROTC or West Point, that would be fine. My general view of life as a grunt is that it sucks as badly as just about anything else imaginable.
|
I found that the Army radically redefined my view of what "sucked" and what wasn't really so bad -- which has been helpful in maintaining perspective in life.
(A former GA colleague of mine who served in the 75th Ranger Regiment had the following pithy comments to some young paralegals he was supervising on a major document production. In response to some griping, he said (paraphrase) "I don't want to sound like the old guy here, but when I was your age I was wading through water up to my neck in some swamps in Georgia.")
That said -- not sure how you're defining a "grunt", but while I agree that being an enlisted soldier in a combat or combat-support unit is a tough life, it really isn't all that bad until or unless you're actually in combat. I think that there are a number of crappier and more dangerous jobs in the civilian sector -- some with worse pay and benefits.

My suspicion is the little hellions might be more likely, however, to take up with whatever the current equivalent of the Sandinistas is. And I'd be proud of them if they did that as well.

I would be sorely disappointed if my kids turned out to be Communist revolutionaries, if for no other reason than their inability to pick a winning side.

So you weren't trying to pick a fight? Condescension is your normal way of interaction?
Good to know.
