I have spoken to various people (on this board even!) about some very painful issues in my past relationships. I have found their advice to be very helpful to me. But they have no stake in the outcome other than that I am happy, and they do not have to make nice with an SO who hurt me had I not followed their advice and decided to stay.
In the successful relationships I have been in, I mostly mainly talked to the other person in the relationship about our issues. The open communications concept seemed to work.

ymmv.

I think it depends on the issues. Obviously, you have to communicate with your SO. There are some issues, though, where, as ncs pointed out, a decision must be made. This is when I would confide in someone to be sure I have my head on straight. Not because I am irritated that he left the toilet seat up.

I just got emailed by my first serious gf from high school. Essentially, it was like an apology email (she moved mid-year, and after a couple of months long distance, she broke up with me). We also hooked up a couple of times in college, but other than that, really no contact for 20 years. Email is about how she feels bad that she treated me poorly (she did?) and that if it makes me feel better, she's been treated poorly by her hubby for 20 years and they're divorcing.

I need a ruling here--obviously she wants to get with me right? Right? Sadly, she didn't send a picture, and you can only imagine that she can't have gotten better after 16 right? I mean she's like 39 or something. Ick.
I think I speakk for Less when I suggest you at least consider asking if she has a hot daughter who might need consoling.

Maybe people have just been in serious relationship after serious relationship. Maybe everyone here is highly principled when it comes to cheating and always has been. I already got some answers that indicate that posters just dumped people instead of cheating.

No matter what the answer, I wanted to hear about people's experiences. I don't know what the focus is on the "impossible" part of my comment. Jesus. Obviously it's not impossible. I just thought cheating was a whole lot more common than it appears to be on this board. Hell, I don't think I have a single male friend who hasn't cheated on someone. And lots of the females I've known have done a whole lot of cheating too.

TM
I cheated. I did it more than once. It totally fucked up me and my marriage. I can't recommend it.
