It is just a link, that is why things change sometimes, because the link is discovered and the person/site didn't appreciate it, or through technological means they have done something to make other images appear. It is similar to the red x you get when you try to link to geocities or the porn picture that randomly appeared one day in very old post that had been quite innocent at the time.
