I would add it to the list of things done by FBoardizens that I myself lack the courage, fitness, tolerance, recklessness or inclination to do, but which I understand and usually respect as part of our little rainbow of humanity.

It's a pretty long list.

And this is the first time it's resulted in photos that I would care to look at.

If we are to take this as a promise you will not post sexy pictures of yourself on the FB I believe I speak for the board in affirming your instincts.

I was promising that, as well as offering thanks that the rest of you have spared us photos of bloody chapped nipples from the marathoning habit. Also, urgent Central Park pooping, whatever the cause.

Penske can vouch for the 19 year old as well - smoother and different.

But here's my question. I would like us both to learn more about the game. And aside from the Women's World Cup and the local women's professional game we went to a few weeks ago, I have no idea of which leagues mean what, which to follow or how to pick a team whose games we can watch all (or most) of and to generally cheer for. Does anyone have a recommendation of a league (that isn't MLS, because it sucks) that plays regularly on tv and has announcers we can at least partially understand? It would be a real bonus if Ironweed hates whatever team we choose.

Thanks in advance!

I am outsourcing your question to the soccer lover in my household who records and watches pretty much everything that is broadcast except for the stuff on Univision.

He's a Chelsea fan, fwiw. And he's a Dynamo fan. MLS isn't as terrible as a lot of people think, and the Red Bulls are be a lot of fun to watch.

Hello, I'm Graham, [RT]'s fiance and avid soccer fan. I'm gonna give you some of the info you were looking for as far as what to watch for soccer, but first, I'm going to take serious issue with your "MLS sucks" comment. You couldn't be more wrong. Is it in the same category as the Brits or Spanish? No, but then, it hasn't been around for over 100 years and the Brits and Spanish don't compete with the NFL, NBA, and MLB for the top athletic talent in this country. That said, MLS will be one of the top flight leagues in the next ten years globally. There are currently 18 teams, a majority of which have stadiums built specifically for them. Attendance is beating the entire NBA and the MLB in most markets. In Seattle, they're pulling over 35,000 a game, which is more than most of the teams in the Barclay's Premier League (English Top Flight). As for quality of play...MLS is now competing equally with the Mexican Primera League (no slouches themselves), as well as the Central American teams. BTW, [RT] tells me you're in New York, which means you should be getting to a Red Bulls game to see one of the greatest goal scorers in football history (Thiery Henry) and the future of U.S. Soccer (Juan Agudelo).

OK, off my soapbox and on to what you were asking about. If you haven't discovered Fox Soccer Channel, do so. You can watch most of the games in the Barclay's Premier League, the best all around football league in the world. Their 2011/2012 season just started. I would recommend DVRng most of the games unless you like getting up at 6:30am on a Saturday. The announcers are all Brits. ESPN2 usually carries one BPL game a week during the season. Obviously the team to watch in the BPL is Manchester United, but I would keep an eye on Liverpool, Manchester City and my team, Chelsea. Fox Soccer also carries the Italian Serie A (AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roma) and the French Ligue 1 (PSG, Marseille). Your other channel is Gol TV. They carry the German Bundesliga (Bayern Munich, Schalke 04) and the Spanish La Liga (Barcelona, Real Madrid). Barcelona is, hands down, the best football team in the world right now. They are virtually unbeatable when at full strength, and watching them is like watching a 90 minute live action clinic on how to play football. It is stunning to watch. That's about it as far as what to look for on TV. Oh, until next spring, when MLS begins their 2012 season on their new home network, NBC Sports.

Hope this helps and I really think you should take a new look at MLS.

Best,

Graham
I knew he'd be pissed about the MLS.

BTW, Ray Hudson, the amazingly over-the-top Scottish announcer on Gol TV, is my favorite. He has a hard-on for Barcelona, especially for Lionel Messi, and isn't afraid to let his love be known. But he's also hysterical to listen to.

Do a couple of YouTube searches for him, but this is a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS6Np-g_h5w

I heard him a few weeks ago with some similie about someone's defense being like spandex on Miami Beach. I don't remember if it was a good thing or a bad thing. But it was definitely something we had to rewind to make sure we heard him right.

Fox Soccer Channel carries the English Premier League. People will argue about whether the English, Spanish, or Italian leagues have the highest level, but for your purposes, watching the EPL will get you plenty of very high quality soccer. You can also find Champions League matches on FSC, which is the tournament of the best club teams in Europe. The Champions League starts with group stages and then progresses throughout the year until the final in May. Towards the end, when you get teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona, the Milan teams, and the best of the EPL playing each other, it can be very high level soccer. Arguably better than a lot of the World Cup matches.

No point in picking a league if you can't watch it, so I would figure out which ones you have available. I have GOL TV and Fox Soccer Channel (or whatever it's called now), and end up watching a lot of La Liga (Spain) and the Bundesliga (Germany). I watch some of the Premiership (England) as well, but am less interested in a random EPL game than a random game from the first two leagues. The top EPL teams can be a lot of fun, especially when they play each other. Watch the Champions League when you can, as you will see the best teams in Europe as that proceeds.

One thing most soccer announcers -- at least the ones I can understand -- don't do is explain what the teams are doing tactically during the games. I really don't understand why they don't do a better job of this, since there is a lot going on during the games. I like the site Zonal Marking.

if you do get Fox Soccer Channel they do a WPL game each week, and cover several college games each week. Seeing women playing might be better? Plus those are all in actual American English.

Next time you come to Oregon, you should try to hit a Timbers game (though tickets can be hard to get). Small stadium, packed with people in team colors and VERY involved with the game. It's quite the scene.
