Interesting that they asked and that she decided he'd be useful, given that one pilot can certainly land the plane alone.
Definitely not what you want to hear as a passenger, but you'd be surprised how often a non-rev pilot is on the plane anyway. At least on routes that carry commuters, which would seem likely here.

what does "non-revenue" mean? Someone not working for that airline?
And the thing that would worry me is the banking and diving. If it had been me walking into the cockpit I'd have dismissed the first officer.

I think "non-revenue" means a pilot who works for the airplane but isn't working that flight. That's what they were hoping for; a guy not actually familiar with their plane was a second choice.
You wouldn't want to announce "are there any pilots on board?", so hence the "non-revenue" modifier.

I have multiple cousins who are pilots, so I'm not surprised at all. One lives near Boston and flies out of Dallas. That's not atypical.

Sounds like the first officer deviated from the flight path to find another, closer place to land.

It used to be called deadheading. But a PA asking whether there are any deadheads onboard might get too much chaff with the wheat.

No, the flight was no where near SF.

Do you ever think about what you're saying/typing? I encourage you to try this out next time your bus driver swerves a bit, and see what the reaction is.

translation: I have never been the captain like Hank has and would have sat quietly in my seat, trying to find explanations for apparent problems, rather than solving them like a leader would have.

Non-rev means an airline employee or immediate family, traveling on passes that allow travel in seats that would otherwise be empty. A non-rev pilot would be a member of the subset of non-revenue travelers that are also pilots (Ty? Diagram?).
Best case scenario would be someone who flies that plane, for the same airline or another. Next best would be someone who flies something similar. Farther down the line is a military pilot like this guy who flies very different planes but has a lot if experience. Worse still would be a private pilot who flies small plane without instrument certification.

Nope, not at all. My brother lives in Minneapolis and flies out of Chicago. His wife, until recently, flew out if Minneapolis and lived in Michigan.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this "think about what you're saying" concept. Get it? "Hard" time? "Head"? Penis! Ha! What were we talking about?

Deadheading is a subset of non-rev traveller. So done who is deadheading is traveling between point a and point b having worked at a and planning to work at b ( ie between shifts ). Could also just be commuting ( getting to work from where they live or vice versa) or enjoying tax free travel benefits.
But this guy sounds like a paying passenger with a lot if flight experience.
