I have always wanted a motorcycle. I have always told myself that responsible fathers/husbands/etc. don't ride motorcycles. I don't know that I've ever really believed, but I've been guilted into following it.
Am I finally close enough to dead that I can say fuck it and buy that two-tone Bonneville I've always known deep down inside Steve McQueen wants me to ride?
I'm actually half-serious here. If I buy the bike, I'm going to be looking at a world of pushback.

My uncle is a neurosurgeon and has taken me to see patients who were on motorcycles. I see the attraction, but among other things it's a shitty way to lose all the skin on your leg.

Ditto with my dad being on staff at T.I.R.R. Mine are all quads and paraplegics. Of course, his is a weird risk assessment. We weren't allowed to have trampolines or ride motorcycles or most other things that could lead to a broken neck, but he sent us off to Europe with no supervision at 16.
That said, Graham's primary mode of transportation is a Vespa knock off and two of my siblings are bike commuters. Everyone is alive and more or less healthy.

Can't really comment on this without knowing what the pushback, and source of pushback, is going to be.

The usual. Kids, ex, girlfriend (God, I hate being over 50 and referring to my 50 yo paramour as my "girl" friend). It's all going to be on the "we don't want you to die" variety. They have a point, but we are ALL dying and I am approaching a day when I will no longer be able to handle the bike due to things like weight restrictions.
Money could be an issue, but I just landed a writing job that will pay off some bills and still get me a used Triumph, just in time for the leaves changing in the fall.

I don’t own a motorcycle, but I’m glad I live in a world where other people have them, if nothing else because I can define responsible decision making in terms of NOT having one.
I won’t disown you.

Writing writing or legal?
And I say if you're serious about wanting to ride, do it. You've been close enough to the edge, what the fuck could anyone say to you, really. My similar thing (and I know this is xenophobic) is seeing the Egyptian pyramids. I'm scared of getting kidnapped/shot by terrorists or separatists or whatever. But if I make 80 I'm going. If i catch a bullet, so be it.

I tell you, I have had one relative get splattered on a motorcycle and last year I was a witness to a guy getting splattered on a motorcycle (who lived but the image of seeing him rag-dolled across the highway will stay with me forever) and this confirms my thought that riding a motorcycle is insane.
I often say you might as well drive it out of the showroom and drive head first into the first taxi you see.
My suggestion, because I like you is spend the scratch and buy an A5 convertible.

Translation: I have a girlfriend.
What are the actual risks? Are they, "you'll get shirt in the city " or are they not really all that different than driving ( which is hella dangerous)?

You mighta have missed the window. Egypt was a police state, and as safe for tourists as one, until not long ago. Now, I don't think I'd go.
Hopefully thing improve before you're 80, but who knows.

We were just there on a Monday and a Tuesday, and we never waited in line long enough for me to notice. Something to be said for taking your vacation when everyone's still in school.

Fuck, yes. Do what you want to do, particularly because of your situation. 20 years in a chair being coddled, but regretful? Fuck that. Its your life, not those you will seek to chastise and limit you.
In fact, you have already answered your own question. You know what you want to do, but are hesitating because making the decision involves unpleasantness in telling others that this is your choice. Absent that discomfort, you would be on a bike now. Pull the trigger.
