I love Allen-Edmonds shoes and wish they still made them for women.
They have lace-up shoes in both the Dress Casual and Casual categories on their web site.
ETA: I should have scrolled before posting.
But Adder, if you didn't let your Allen-Edmonds get too far gone and haven't tossed them, you can send them in for recrafting. Alas, I let my favorite A-E loafers get too far gone before sending them in and they couldn't rebuild them. I asked about having another pair custom made for me after they discontinued the women's line but they told me they destroyed the lasts (or whatever the form they use for making shoes is called).

Plus, I'm cheap. I don't own a single suit that retails for over $800 (and I sure as shit didn't pay that much). Are more expensive shoes/suits nicer? Of course they are. But they're not exponentially nicer. The only people who are really going to notice that I'm wearing a $500 suit instead of a $1000 suit are people whose opinions I could care less about. If they want to look down their noses at me, go for it. I'd rather spend my money on other things, like traveling.

This is nonresponsive. I am asking why Florsheim shoes have a worse reputation. Are they too accountant-y -- sturdy but lacking style? Is the quality not what it used to be? Or something else? This is what I am trying to understand.
ETA thanks to Taxwonk for actually answering my question.

I've worn Allen Edmonds for years. Great shoes, extremely comfortable, not cheap. I bought several pairs of their flagship black plain-toe lace-up dress shoes five or six years ago. That was before they discontinued the model, which had been around for 35 years. You can never count on anything these days.
I use shoe trees, rotate the pairs I wear when I want to wear that shoe style, and buff/polish regularly. I can use them with business suits, formal wear (the whole shoe shines up very nicely), and through the airport on business travel--no metal shanks. Can't beat 'em for versatility and comfort. They're elegant, but not the most hip/stylish shoes in the world. Every U.S. president has allegedly ordered/worn pairs of the model I have for decades. Nevertheless, I get favorable comments on them all the time. Maybe because I keep them properly shined.
If you're conscientious about re-soling your shoes before you wear a hole through the inner part, and if you take proper care of the uppers, you can keep high-quality leather shoes for many years. Also, Allen Edmonds has an excellent re-crafting program for most of their shoes, excluding the Italian loafer styles.
This concludes my unpaid plug for Allen Edmonds shoes. I have other brands, but I keep coming back to theirs.

Agreed. The re-crafting is especially cool because your shoes then last forever but remain broken in. Of course, living several miles from the factory while in the Great White North helps because it meant substantial savings at the factory outlet. Full price is a bit painful for a pair of shoes.
At the risk of sounding like a white trash cad, outside of work I prefer the looks/comfort/value of Kenneth Cole.
Unless we start talking about vintage concert t-shirts, that is my last ncs-esque fashion post. Besides, there is definitely the risk of disaster when taking fashion tips from this crowd.

Allen-Edmonds also has an outlet on Ebay. You need to check regularly, because selection in all sizes can be spotty. It also pays to send an email asking what the irregularity is before bidding, since they don't accept returns or exchanges.
On the other hand, you can sometimes get a $250 pair of shoes for about $75.

I think Slave is richer than most of us. We all make lawyer money -- we'll never be rich.

Once the house is bought, the real spending begins.
This month:
1. Painting the newly redone kitchen, and other miscellaneous painting/handyman work.
2. Babyproofing.
3. Artificial grass to create a "play area" in the flat (concrete) part of our otherwise hilly backyard.
4. New carpet throughout the whole house.
5. Possibly doggie boot camp.
Helloooo credit card debt.

Glass half-empty, glass half-full.
Barry Bonds won't be indicted today, but they're still investigating him.
Thanks to all shoe mavens. I particularly liked a couple of TM's suggestions.

It's not a hit, it's a holiday
Cool celebrity/hero sighting in Silver Lake last night, at cool local restaurant "Cliff's Edge"
Remarkably plain-looking in person. But that didn't stop me from having many many (mostly non-sexual) dreams about her last night, including that she and I were appearing together on camera in a video for Belle & Sebastian's "Funny Little Frog."

Hank + fb (or PLF)
If Hank's avatar hooked up with fb's, I think the spawn would look something like what is chronicled at www.catsthatlooklikehitler.com
If I weren't hotmeal challenged, I would make the linky all hypertexty and say "here".

Hey... Wait a second. I thought you and I were like soul mates.

Oh, and NotBob, if you search "barrel in mouth, toe on trigger" I think you'll find what you're looking for.

I have said this to you many times before -- you rock. Thanks.
Here it is:

2. Working mid-level managment job at insurance company
3. Visible stomach below belt line
4. Comb-over
5. Watching shopping network in stained Fruit of Loom Briefs
6. Listening to music with horns
A. Shoot heroin; get it all over with
B. French kiss business end of .44
C. Pop rocks/soda at same time
D. Eat diced pineapple from crack whore's crack
E. Draino sundae
F. Both barrels under chin, toe on trigger

Very Gnotorious

The eccentric base note that starts the "Crazy" chorus but comes in one beat before it seems that it "naturally" should, is even more disconcerting when you use it in a mash-up.
