Given the dearth of any other comments and/or commentary, is there anyone that can provide information in response to my request for information on Telecom jobs? Also, can anyone provide a reference to a good headhunter? I know Susan Belardi is gone, so is there anyone else that is good???

Someone has gotta know something.

Given how well the D.C. government has run Camelot, I'm certain that we can expect a classy, well-run establishment.

Antitrust news

From legaltimes.com . . .

Both suggest possibilities of hiring, although moving to Belgium might not be first on anyone's list of destinations.

NO WAFFLING ON BELGIUM

Arnold & Porter is taking another leap across the pond, with plans to open a Brussels office at summer's end. Led by antitrust lawyer Marleen Van Kerckhove, the new outpost "will dramatically strengthen our European competition team," says William Baer, head of the D.C. antitrust group. The office will kick off with about a half-dozen lawyers. "We had been considering this for a long time," adds Baer, who will spend time in Belgium helping to establish the firm's second European branch. A&P set up shop in London in 1997.

PAUL, WEISS GETS COMPETITIVE

It's official: Outgoing Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Competition Director Joseph Simons has joined the D.C. office of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. The addition of Simons, who was a partner at Clifford Chance before he moved to the FTC in 2001, marks a bid by Paul, Weiss to expand its 20-lawyer D.C. office. "We expect to attract additional people, associates, and partners, and have a major antitrust practice in Washington," says Paul, Weiss chairman Alfred Youngwood. Simons says he considered rejoining Clifford Chance, which he describes as a "wonderful" firm, but was attracted by the opportunity to build a practice at Paul, Weiss.

I wish that more people would just come out and say, "They offered me more cash".

Yeah, that and "associates might actually come to this firm still."

I never took paigow for a letter writer.

From Dr. Gridlock

Dear Dr. Gridlock:

With our recent rainy weather, I certainly understand why so many choose very large golf-type umbrellas (the very long ones that don't fit in a bag or briefcase). However, I would like to ask people to please, please pay attention to how you carry them.

It is not uncommon to see someone carrying the umbrellas horizontally. The result is that as the person's arm swings, the pointed end is thrust forward. I have seen one woman hit in the stomach.

Perhaps if you mention it in your column, they'll be a little more cautious.

DC Hiring?

Big Firms Begin Hiring for Upturn
New demand for corporate, international work expected

Lily Henning
Legal Times
08-11-2003

In the late 1990s, shrewd law firm managers deepened their litigation, bankruptcy, and white collar crime practices in hopes of capturing business during an anticipated economic downturn.

Now they're quietly calculating which practices will ripen next.

Many of D.C.'s biggest firms are preparing for a transactional comeback, hanging on to corporate lawyers despite low billables and even starting to hunt for laterals. Others are honing in on European regulatory work or arbitration. Still others say that, while evergreen, health care is a solid bet for growth.

What they all agree on, though, is the necessity of preparing for cyclical shifts. Litigation is expected to remain strong at most firms, but there are indicators that practices like bankruptcy have passed their zenith.

Powell gets new leader

Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy has a new leader and it is James J. McAlpin. Insiders tell me this is an excellent move for the firm.

The Chicago Reader (local free Chicago paper) used to chronicle performance art that was similar several years ago. It had a lot less of the frat-boy yuppie-hours feel though.

The one I always remembered was telling 20 peole to dress in entirely black clothes (or something similar) and appear at appointed Elevated stations in the Loop to greet the first person they encountered on an El platform. At 7 AM on a Sunday morning. And give the person encountered a rose without saying a word. Then get on the next train and go home. It was supposed to me more theater of the absurd than theater of a meet-market.

No "flash", no "mob", and no wonder it never seemed like no more than 8 or 10 people could ever be organized for such random events. Still, it seems way more absurd to do such things in a solitary manner.

So screw New York "art". Chicago is where its at.

Lying Liars and the Law Firms that Protect Them

The Post reports that Hogan and Hartson represented Fox in its trademark suit, which was called frivolous by the judge, against Al Franken's book. Fortunately for our in-town friends, they can blame it on the NY office.

Proposal for New Thread Posting Convention: Let Individual Subjects Get Their Own Threads.

I am active on several community bulletin boards that use a discussion forum program similar to this one (pHp, etc) and I think that the functionality of this DC board could be greatly enhanced. It is far more functional than Infirmation's antiquated Greedy Associates board, but at the same time I don't think we are getting the most out of this forum.

Maybe this is unwelcome, but I've decided to take it upon myself to campaign for this. Could we please start posting new topics in their own individual threads? It would make discussion much more accessible.

For example, the Chicago forum might have 50 individual threads like:

Latham & Watkins

Job openings in Chicago

Restaurants

Layoff Rumor at Firm X

Altheimer disintegrates.

Moving to Chicago--Chicago Housing

Illinois Bar Exam

Bonuses at Sidley

etc.

A forum like the Chicago forum would probably get 15 new threads per month. This system would be far more functional than the current system where we have 250 posts covering a number of topics in a single thread.
