Apparently she is rather disliked. |

 | I have generally managed to avoid thinking about her, but yes, she is disliked, because -- although in real life I am sure she is a wonderful beautiful person -- in her writing she generally comes across as narcissistic, selfish, shallow and loathesome.

I of course did loathesome things when I was in my 30s in Brooklyn, like everybody else. But we knew we were just being assholes, and it did not even occur to me to try to rationalize my behavior as some sort of zeitgeist for a lost generation of privileged white people coming to grips with their new lives as parents of young children.

Edited to add: BUT thank you for posting, because the comments thread is pretty top notch.

		| Amy, FYI it's not regression…you've always been an asshole. Also, everyone with even the slightest bit of knowledge about "Brownstone Brooklyn" knows that 75% of everything you write is complete bullshit. In the 90s you were the shittier version(if that possible) of Candace Bushnell; now you are like a creepy, old distant cousin to Lena Dunham that follows her around at a family party shouting "OMG I'm just like you!" and "I've been living in Brooklyn for years!" |

Every generation thinks that they are unique, no? Because their new (to them) experiences are, well, new (to them). Even if Flaubert got there first, it has got be seem a bit strange and unique when a (you thought) happily married friend tells you that she went to third base with some dude on the L train because she was bored out of her mind by domesticity.

I mean, it may have happened in a Cheever story, but if I saw one of my neighbors in my swimming pool en route through all of Rye's pools, I may still post about it on my blog as a symbol of, you know, *something* profound and unique about life in the conformist Pleasant Valley/Stepford-y modern suburb, right? |

For Sohn, that's real progress.

 | Yes, but I will go out on a limb and suggest that you would probably do it in a way that didn't make you and everyone else involved seem like a totally repulsive and hateful asshole. |
