Challenge to the Domestic Partners Law In Portlland
Aren't basically all of these lawsuits (either way, liberal or conservative), simply lawsuits in search of some plaintiffs? It doesn't really matter whether the center was created 3 days ago or 3 decades ago--it's always some set of activists seeking out a couple of sympathetic folks to be named plaintiffs nominally seeking policy change.

I think it matters to local folks where these suits originate. If there is a genuine goundswell of support for a specific position and a large external entity comes in to bolster that groundswell, I don't have an issue. But, when (as here) there is no real groundswell, rather, there is an external entity that is simply taking advantage of a place where the media market can easily be dominated, and advertising etc. is inexpensive, I have an issue.

Right, so I think we're in agreement. The real concern isn't who's handling the lawsuit, it's whether the lawsuit is based on some important local law/practice for which there's legitimate local support to change.

Practicing in Maine Is Cool
In the category of why it is cool to practice in Maine, the Portland Press Herald had a story today about federal agents' raid on a methadone clinic. The story is here:
http://www.pressherald.com/news/loca...ethadone.shtml
You will note that the clinic is represented by Robert Hatch, who gives a comment. Hatch is a 2000 law school graduate. Pretty cool if you ask me. HIs martindale bio is below.

Maine Casinos
The Casino in Sanford has been all over the press. Have Maine Law firms been involved? If so, who? I would think that either Pierce Atwood or Preti Flaherti's political arms would be involved?

Right Wing Nuts in Maine
Would someone please explain to me why some people think they need not pay taxes. Do these people consume no public services? Only if they walk everywhere. Below is a link to an article in the Portland Press Herald about a woman in Biddeford who hasn't paid taxes in 10 years, is being evicted and has threatened to shoot it out with the police if they come for her property. Nice.

Sidewalks.
There's always some loons in any area who think the law doesn't apply to them, or it's unconstitutional. Maybe she can find a place in Idaho.
