Oh, yeah, I didn't mean both on the same trip.
Also, try Sicily.

Taormina is beautiful and a lot fancier/swankier, at least to my recollection, than the rest of the island. It was among our last stops after having traversed a bit of the island. Definitely a recommendation, although maybe I liked Cefalu and Erice a bit more, just for feeling, at least at that time, a tiny bit more authentic.
As for Egypt, there are definitely photos on my facebook of there too. I'm not sure I'd go right now, nor am I sure how the current environment changes my thoughts from when we did go, but that won't stop me from sharing them.
In Cairo, the river was beautiful, as were the highlight sights. But generally one of the things I'm looking for in a city is the ability to walk around and look at stuff. Cairo was the least walkable place I've been, perhaps. Not only because of the crazy traffic that feels out of control, but also because it was very hard to navigate. Definitely worth a visit, but not among my favorite cities.
The thing is we wanted to do a Nile cruise, which meant that we did something we never do: booked a tour. At the time it made some sense as there would have been some slightly complicated logistics to work out, and there are some local concerns that it would be nice to have help with, but the experience did not leave me wanting to do more tours.
Starting with the cruise. We flew from Cairo to Aswan, skipping the much earlier flight to Abu Simbel, which might have been a mistake. I did enjoy the small boat tour of the Nile below the damn, although the stop at the "Nubian village" was the sort of thing that makes me not do tours, and the physical setting around the river there was very nice. I don't recall there being much to the town, although we did walk around a shopping area for awhile. We slept aboard the boat, but there was a classy-looking, Victorian era (perhaps not technically) hotel that seemed like the way I might have gone had I been more comfortable with the area/involved in the planning.
From there it was however many days of cruising and stopping at temples and things along the way. Again, I don't regret doing it, but the boats not all that much fun, and there's only so much looking at riverbank to do. It did leave me time to wonder if we couldn't have driven and had a better experience with hotels and restaurants instead of everything on the boat.
End of the cruise was in Luxor, where I would have been happy to spend more time. I would have liked to explore the town some more, and, of course, the temples in the city and tombs across the river are places where you can definitely find interesting things to do. I guess my recommendation would be skip the cruise and just fly to Luxor and spend a few days there.
From Luxor we fly to Sharm el Sheikh on the red sea. While our resort was lovely, it was a bit outside of town. Given that we're the type that like to walk around, being closer in would have been nice and we actually did like the town itself too, at least for wandering before and after dinner. Great snorkeling, even right off the beach, although the water was a lot colder than I expected. It would be a great place for a beach vacation if it wasn't quite so far away.
You also need to be prepared to completely ignore the vendors selling crap to tourists or even local pan handlers. If you acknowledge them at all, they won't leave you alone.

It is, and I've never seen anything else like it.
And yeah, if you're better at relaxing in one place and I and my typical travelling party, you can probably make it work.

Taormina is beautiful in a way, but really touristy and sterile. I would spend time elsewhere in Sicily (or I could rent you the family manse in Caulonia for a week, say for $1000?) that is more real then rest up in Taormina- go when Etna is active.

Can I tag along on the trip?

Hey, you! We should have lunch. Or drinks. Or both.

This is part of my drinking in castles tour group, so no choice on Taormina, but I hope to have at least a few days elsewhere on the Island. Most interested in the Greek, Arabic and Norman historical periods. Tell me more about the family manse.

The stop I have to make is St. Catherine's. Depending on time, I'd like to see Alexandria and the coast more than Cairo, and a stop by some old pyramids or temples is sort of a thing one has to do, right?

Don't know St. Catherine at all, and we did not do Alexandria. But you could certainly work in a stop in Luxor to get your fill of temples and tombs. And if you're there, you probably need to hit Giza, which means Cairo.

I'm happy to report that I'm doing much better today. There's nothing like a night's sleep in your own bed, without interruption every two hours, to restore the systemic part of the body. The soul, too, does better at home.
I'm not going to be walking around the block any time soon, but I don't need to call for help in the middle of the night to make it to the head.
You all need to take good care of yourselves. This particular path is not one I would recommend.

I'm reading Nick Offerman's book right now and it occurs to me that you might enjoy it (if you like his Parks and Rec character at all; he reminds me in some ways of you).* Since you might have some enforced free time to fill up right about now. Speedy recovery vibes coming your way!!
* I generally like it, but it does get a little tired hearing Ron Swanson's voice in my head for the entire book. He might be better suited to a quick magazine article instead of an entire book...

Actual Fashion Post
today I was on the 2 train heading downtown. At 110th and CPW a thirtish woman got on and sat across from me. The best word to describe her would be precise. She wasn't beautiful, but everything looked put together. Her pants, blouse, coat and bag were all well made, tailored, cleaned and pressed. Her shoes were unique and went well with the rest.
She crossed her leg and her right shoe now had its toe pointed at me.
It was rainy today and on the side of her shoe, where she couldn't see it, there was a leaf right above the sole; it was yellow, oval and small.
I wanted to tell her, it was maddening, she was too put together to not want to know. She would want to know, right? I turned it over and over. The average person wouldn't give a shit about a leaf, but she would.
Then we got to 96th and I got off, having said nothing.
I suspect in retrospect that was best?

Thanks. I'll have to pick it up. I'm flattered by the comparison.
