No, I botox because I don't like forehead lines and want to keep up my looks.

Do you honestly think that I feel threatened by 20-somethings? I don't feel threatened by any other woman. There's no point, and that sort of thing just leads to competition among women, which is something I despise.

Not that I would ever compare myself to her, or speak for her, but Catherine Deneuve has had a whack of plastic surgery. I don't think Catherine Deneuve is threatened by any other woman -- I just think she wants to continue to look good.

The world is a much better place if people who can take care of themselves and keep up their looks. For the opposite of Catherine Deneuve, look at Brigitte Bardot. The woman is a disaster and she started out looking so good. The fact that she let herself go is sad -- it's like a great musician or artist throwing away their art.

That is my philosophy. Reasonable people may differ.

Ask Not Bob -- the Fenwick Edition

As promised by my much-beloved boss (don't let him fool you, by the way -- in real life, he ain't all that nice), here I am, fresh from the 8 millionth time I've defended the deposition of the workplace safety boss at Piggly-Wiggly. She doesn't even wait for the questions any more -- she simply swears herself him, and starts her soliloquy, covering *everything* from my objections to form to the other side's sneering "isn't it true that" gotchas. The first few times she did it, plaintiffs lawyers objected, but even they figured out that it saves everyone a lot of time and trouble. She keeps threatening to do it with a Charlie McCarthy dummy next time (I suggested a Waylon and Madam routine, but she said that she's old school on this sort of thing), or of having the court reporter just re-printing the transcript. But I digress.

Anyway, Not Bob took off for a long weekend (the new chief judge in Podunkville is Italian, so the courthouse is closed on Monday this year), so he asked me to handle his "Ask Not Bob" column today. So, here goes.

Dear Not Bob:

I like to think of myself as cool and hip, but a lot of the cultural references here on the FB seem to fly over my head. What can I do to be less stupid?

Signed,

Clueless in Cleveland

Dear Coltrane:

Cleveland? Nice try. Anyway, Stiffler turned 30 recently. You're now old. Time to fall into the soft alcoholism of middle age, going gently into the good night. Dockers are back, and it's no coincidence.

Dear Kumbaya Boy:

Your schtick is tired. No one believes that you are some avuncular hicksville solo who interacts with a gently acerbic cast of characters named Big Ed or Wanda. Give it up, asshole, and just admit that you are some biglaw grunt, posting from the bowels of a document review warehouse in Weehawken.

Signed,

Replaced Texan

Uh, it's actually Long Island City, but damn, RT, that's some cold shit. IP addresses don't lie.

Dear Not Bob,

I like pets, small children, sad movies, parades, and a Gershwin tune (how about yooooooou?). Yet that never seems to be the impression I leave people with. What am I doing wrong?

Signed,

Secretly Sensitively Soft Inside

Hank, if you want friends, be friendly.

Dear Not Bob,

Why are all these bitches so mean to me?

Signed,

And fuck you, too.

Indeed, fringey. I wonder whatever happened to Anything That Moves?

True, though, about the hanging-around-people-who-smoke thing. It completely ruins my policy. That's why I try to avoid people who smoke.

Odd. Whole article in Allure about it.

Featured Diane Keaton, Christie Brinkley etc.

Don't deny you feel societal pressure to look younger.

What the hell does botox have to do with hair color? I don't color my hair, and I do have grey. But then I have a bunch of other colors too, and I like them. Plus, I don't like messing with my hair that much, and if I were to to go crazy with color, I'd want to go blue or pink or red or something thoroughly unnatural. That's not going to happen as long as I'm working here.

My sisters, otoh, haven't seen their natural colors in years.

TM always whacks on me for not being naturally gifted with being "attractive" but one thing I am with you on is maximizing what you are given and trying with makeup and keeping up with hair and clothes to try to look presentable. I am all for that.

He may disagree with me but I'm told I look young. College interns have expressed shock I have kids they thought I was their age. It is in part energy level as well not just looks I don't smoke either.

You should groom. hair, eyebrows, artfully applied makeup

Ny is all about women getting mileage out of being thin and ugly or thin and stylish but not so pretty.

Sorry Spanky.

I just said why I do it. I like to keep up my looks. I don't think it makes me look younger. I already look like someone in her mid-20s. Why would I want to look younger than that? Because I have some authority at my job, I would prefer to look like someone in her mid-30s (with no wrinkles). That is my aim.

I think it's very strange that you can't imagine that a woman would want to look good for the sake of looking good, as opposed to a concern for what other people think. Do you think the same thing about men? And is it just one's physical appearance, or is it other appearances? I spent a few hours recently trimming the trees and raking the leaves on the side of my house. I didn't do this because I thought the neighbors would care -- I just wanted it to look tidy. Does that sound plausible to you?

Are you apologizing to Spanky because you don't want to look 16?

I used to work with a tall blonde bombshell type. She's approaching or is 40. She works out like a fiend and is accomplished but is having an utter crisis about aging. I think she's too wrapped up in her looks. It's not a healthy place to be.

I think botox is excessive. Just my opinion aren't we all about opinions around here?
