Well then, what about Jeff Garcia?

He also says, when asked what he would do if an NFL player admitted he was gay, "I probably wouldn't say anything right off the bat. I'd just see what everyone else has to say. I'd probably keep my distance, and hopefully, he would keep his. If it was a guy who was helping us win ball games, hey, I'd have no problem with it. He can do what he wants to do outside of my everyday life."

Link.

So I think the answer is, yes, he's an ass. But no, he's not a homophobe. At least not as much as Jeremy Shockey, anyway.

Inferior life form? Since when do we as humans get to designate which life forms are superior and which are inferior?
the entire situation is made all the more confusing by the fact that Garcia does in fact look a little ratlike. nttawwt.

Sounds homophobic to me. He would keep his distance and the other guy hopefully would to? He has no problem with it unless he's not helping to win ball games? Does that mean that if he's second string, he gets run off the team by Owens?

Whatever. The guy is an idiot.

I don't know. I'm no TO fan, but he seems like he's struggling with this issue. I would suspect the TO, and most football players, have never had to deal with someone who was openly gay. So he almost certainly has no empirical data from which to work. Given the homophobia that is often fostered among atheletes, this sounds pretty damn enlightened.

Once you factor in that TO is not exactly William Safire in terms of linguistic precision, I can be charitable and interpret this as him saying "I would react negatively to being hit on by a man, but that aside I am more concerned with performance on the job than a person's private life."

Oh sure. Garcia looks like a rat. And why is it that we do not instead say that rats look like Garcia? It is time we think about the specist notions some of us hold.

If someone says he wants to keep his distance from homosexuals and hopes that homosexuals keep their collective distance from him, my guess is that the person is homophobic. In fact, I do not think there is much room for debate here. So let's just drop this boring thread and get going on the far more interesting species-related discussion.

This is such a stretch. Homophobic does not mean that he is going to beat up all gay people he meets. It means that he has fear or contempt for gay people. It does not mean that the fear or contempt is so overwhelming that it would prevent him from playing on the same team as a win-contributing gay player. It just means he has fear or contempt for gay people. If someone wants gay people to stay away from him and wants to stay away from gay people, that person is, almost by definition, homophobic. "Pretty damn enlightened"? You probably not only think that rats are inferior creatures, but that your views on the subject are remarkably progressive.

I think the solution is to give him some X, a room full of college students, and see what happens.

This is perhaps outable, but I went to law school with a guy we all called Randy the Ferret. (because he looked like a ferret).

Also, on the subway today, some guy sitting got up before his stop and told me I had fantastic head-alignment. It is not too often that happens and it made my day.

Johnny Depp

I wonder if Johnny Depp would kiss Jeff Garcia?

Johnny Depp is the latest heartthrob who’s rumored to be puckering up for a same-sex smooch in an upcoming film,“The Libertine,” about 17th Century poet John Wilmot, also known as the Earl of Rochester.

Wilmot was believed to be bisexual, and spies are reporting that Depp has some heavy-duty tonsil-hockey scenes with another man in the flick. “His name is Rupert Friend and he’s a fairly unknown actor,” says the source, “but very handsome. The lucky guy.”

The lucky guy indeed.

In other sad sad news, Sigourney Weaver says she will not watch Alien v. Predator which is the stupidest premise for a movie ever thought up. Hey Hollywood, come up with some new ideas for a change. Like more hot guys in movies running on beaches.

I am against rats, but not ratphobic in the sense of being afraid of them. I do hold them in contempt. I have killed rats before, and I would do it again. Suffice it to say, if I were to discover a rat in my house, I would not rest until it were dead, or at least permenantly removed from the premises. I want rats to stay away from me. I want to stay away from rats. I don't care if the rat can pass for 1500 yards a season. A rat's a rat. I have no pretensions that my views in this matter are in any way progressive, but I don't care. Down with rats.
