Omfg. An elementary school?!?
I'm literally shaking right now. Two of the four are in elementary school. Newtown is about 30 miles from me.

I'm glad for you that it wasn't your kids' school. But so sad for the families of the children who were killed.
Who kills elementary students?????

Some news source I read mentioned that the shooter was the son of one of the teachers and she was one of the first people killed.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that he killed his mother, who was a teacher, at home and then went in to the school to kill children.
What. the. fuck.

It's incomprehensible. All I can think of is how scared those kids were. One teacher, who herded her kids into an in-classroom bathroom and locked the door described how they were all saying, "I just want to have Christmas!" OMG, it's beyond heartbreaking.

from someone else's twitter page "One guy tries to use a shoe bomb = Everyone at the airport takes their shoes off. 31 school shootings since Columbine = no changes"

I heard a terrorism expert on the news this evening say, "With a soft target like a school, someone who wants to do this will find a way to get in." There is no cure for this. There is no fix. Limiting gun purchases can have some effect, but this is just the ultimate "WTF?" scenario.
Even among deranged lunatics, this heinous level of shit is supposed to be off limits.

That's pithy and all, but there have been changes. Even in my little town, the elementary school is locked during school hours and the receptionist has to buzz you in. That was unheard of (at least in rural areas) before Columbine. Of course, locks wouldn't have stopped Columbine, but you know what I'm getting at.
Imagine if the schools were locked where you live!!
You know the one about the bear shitting in the woods?

That is also what happened here. They buzzed him in because they knew him. The guns belonged to his mom.
And I hate to break it to people who call for "praying for the children." If prayers didn't work before this happened what would make someone think someone is there to listen to them now?

The changes have to be in the gun ownership laws. Maybe limited ammo. Maybe no handguns. Maybe one gun per person. Maybe if this guy goes in with a revolver, another 20 people live.

That school stopped letting me come in after the Amish school massacre. Locked down is nice, but the deranged can get in when the kids are coming in. Plus, the deranged are often one of the students.

What else do you say? I'm with you, but now isn't the time to cite this as suggested Appendix Entry 947823623 for The God Delusion.
