Not really. All he really cares about is swinging it around and knocking over empty bottles. It's a nice parlor trick though.

But, honestly, I can barely distinguish Beyonce from Rihanna from Lady Gaga. For those who appreciate this music more and can better judge the artistry of Beyonce v. Beck, does Kanye have a point? Was it disrespectful to give the award to Beck? I love Beck, but don't like his latest (not crazy about Sad Beck) so I don't have an emotional dog in this fight. Or is Kanye just a deranged agitator? Or brilliant propagandist? Or both?

The Grammys: a celebration of awful bubblegum pop entertainers that for some reason thinks it needs to occasionally reward actual artists* who hit their peak 20 years ago.
*actual musicians who write, play and sing their own music. As opposed to entertainers.

the guy at the New Yorker told me they picked my caption, in part, to recognize the brillance of my Guernica posts here. If I'd reminded them about the Gilligan posts maybe I'd have won

I don't really follow the Grammys, but if you look back at recent Album of the Year winners, this formula does not really apply:
Daft Punk, Mumford & Sons, Adele, Arcade Fire, Taylor Swift, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Herbie Hancock, Dixie Chicks, U2, Ray Charles, Outkast.
It is a baffling array of artists, but most write, perform, and sing their own stuff. Not much bubblegum pop, either. Also awesome is that Toto won the award in 1983! For Toto IV.

Christopher Cross beat out The Wall in 1981. Talk about taking a dump between the moon and New York City.

I thought “Morning Phase” was a great album — to put on during brunch.
(In other words, a pretty good album.)

All awards shows rely on the false premise that people who engage in the creation of art are better than the rest of us at judging when it has been done well. I would much rather follow the blog or Twitter account of one artist or musician whose creativity I admire than have the same opinion crowdsourced. The only musician who fills that role for me is David Byrne, and even he is only batting .500 on his recommendations.

There is only one way that you could have more thoroughly destroyed the OG credibility you built up here the last couple of weeks than by admitting you look to David Byrne as an arbiter of musical merit, and that is by admitting that you eat brunch. Seriously, look through the lyrics of of every street-hardened rap song of the last 30 years. The word "brunch" does not appear.
ETA: Of course I'm completely wrong about that. In fact, someone actually compiled a list of the best rap songs that mention brunch:
http://firstwefeast.com/laugh/best-rap-lyrics-brunch/
I stand by what I said about Byrne, though.

As a few of you may remember*, I have a label that has 5 grammy nominations for classical music.** The grammy approach to classical music is summed up by the fact that one year Bob Dylan beat us in one category. Still, a nomination means sales. There is nothing else that does as much for sales by little independents than a grammy nod.
*And if you follow me on facebook and don't remember this, let me know aso I can increase the level of classical music spam you see there in the future.
**And if any of the nominators paid any real attention, we would have had two this year, and I would be in LA at the convention center across the street without television cameras where they do the classical awards, instead of watching the snow out my window around here.

2 summers ago I saw Tom Tom Club. I always thought they were better than Talking Heads. They were great and Tina W. is still pretty cute.
I did like the album where Byrne used found "vocals" backed by electronic music. I think that may have been with Eno?
The thing that is saddest from this band is that they only issued their band version of the songs on True Stories. The actors' version were much better. John Goodman, "growing big as a house!"

Thurgreed told me it wasn’t working for me, so I went back to being dorky and honest. I feel like this place could really use a mentorship program.
