How does finishing that or any other book make someone an artist with the English language?
Unless the person who told you this is David Foster Wallace, of course.
(For those of us in the generation that watched Hill Street Blues, there is an absolutely hilarious bit in that book about the series. It comes early in the book....)

You should get the Ironman tattoo anyway. It will make his head explode.

I went to a lot of museums last time I was in Paris. Does that also make me an artist of the post-impressionist image?
I don't think so, but you seem to have your own personal dictionary at work here, so whatever.

My rant was about Wallace -- not the reader.

You were telling him what tattoos he has? You know he's dead, and therefore not likely to be on this board, right?
(I am an artist of the stripper pole, too.)

I remember talking with Dave about some of his ideas for the book, and saying it all sounded kind of silly. Then he started laughing uncontrollably and choking on his blunt. He was more prone to talking about the quantity of weed he'd finished than the quantity of writing. Always kind of ashamed he hadn't written more.

I think we've found something worse than the ironman tattoo.

No, just having trouble grasping the idea that saying "I read x book" means "I think I can write" rather than "I like to show off about what I read."
Though as a counterpoint to my own point, I do recall a great long-ago post from Thurgreed which established that he is an artist of the blow-job, even though I don't think he's ever given one.
