I had understood that he was speaking to college students, but I could be wrong.

I have no problem with that either. IF he wants to argue the war is bad because it requires stupid people to serve, he's free to make that pitch.

I don't think he thinks or meant to say that, and I don't think you do either.
eta: And just so we're clear that I'm not interested in defending Kerry, let me approvingly quote this:
- JK has once again demonstrated how his lack of verbal discipline can cause serious problems in a campaign. It may be best for Democrats to just toss him overboard and weather this storm.
"May" be? I wish he'd just go away. He brings nothing to the table.

and here's all that the Dems need to do to neutralize it:
- "Whatever the intent, Senator Kerry was wrong to say what he said," Tennessee Democratic Senate hopeful Rep. Harold Ford Jr. said. "He needs to apologize to our troops," Ford said.

That's a horrible thing to say. I know scores of graduates from top universities who have volunteered to be infantrymen in Iraq. Doesn't everyone?

The admission-against-interest principle doesn't work for you here. Harold Ford is triangulating.

Do you have even 1% belief that you can figure out what Kerry meant (on any subject) based on what he said?
Seriously, what do you think his point was? That the military is largely comprised, at least in the bottom ranks, of people who failed in the education system? (Or, viewed differently, of people who come from the poorest areas of the country, most under-served by the public education system?)*
How dare he suggest such a thing!?!
*For the record: This is all I can glean from the R rantings about this non-issue. I haven't seen what Kerry said and don't much care.

A resounding "2". I'm sure Rove and crew will capitalize on this non-issue, but that's all that it is.
OTOH, the more times Rs mention Iraq, the better.

Have you been reading the board the past few days? An HS diploma means there is a 50% chance they can read, or something like that (ask Spanky for details).
Given the economic background of the average military recruit, I would question whether they are at the level of the average HS graduate -- and that is a pretty low bar (again, ask Spanky for details).

I said that Kerry didn't mean the comments the way the GOP is claiming. You posted a link from FOX News -- oh, the irony -- quoting Harold Ford to show just how wrong I was. You were suggesting that since another Democrat was criticizing Kerry, he must have meant it. My point is that since Ford is running for Senate in a red state by trying to play off both sides -- what Dick Morris and Bill Clinton called, in a different context, triangulation -- his comments on the subject are about as probative as George W. Bush's.
I hope the country spends the next week talking about how kids without a lot of education are dying in Iraq. It beats talking about which party Harold Ford went to at the Super Bowl.

I liked the nutjob comment. If it means Democrats stop being weenies, I'm all for it.
