He don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band.*

I'm not sure it was recorded there, but Matador Records seems to think it was, as that's where I got the link. Cat Power isn't my favorite, possibly because I've dated women who remind me of her, alcoholism and all.

I really like Madeline Peyroux's cover of Elliot Smith's "Between The Bars." Her version just anoints the song as a standard. In fact, I propose that anytime someone decides that they want to cover Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," that instead they take a swing at "Between The Bars" or any other Elliott Smith tune.

Then again, what do I know? I couldn't prevent Memphis from choking, even with Justin Timberlake's help.

Can anyone recommend chicks with more of a rocker side such as Ani diDiFranco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SrJo...eature=related), Liz Phair (no one needs my help), Missy Higgins (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRX3k_im5I8), early Sinead, or Fiona Apple (her 8 year-later follow up album rocked - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsMZk...eature=related) .

I don't really think of Liz Phair and Fiona Apple in quite the same category but...if you like Fiona Apple, you might also like Pieta Brown. FWIW. the WSJ listed her latest album as one of the best of 2007. They compared her to Lucinda Williams but she reminds me more of Martha Wainwright (daughter of Loudon, sister of Rufus).

I'd recommend Brandi Carlisle, The Murmurs, Mary Karzlen (love love love her album called Yelling at Mary), Kristen Hall, and of course Joan Armatrading.

My trainer was especially evil yesterday with some exercises and today my inner thighs hurt more than a virgin's on the morning after Prom Night. I'm actually sitting here with a heating pad on them.

hmm. I've been listening to a lot of Regina Spektor lately, but I think she's a little too soft for what you're looking for.

More on the roots/americana/alt-country side, but Jessica Lea Mayfield. Saw her open for the Avett Brothers last night, and was really impressed. She apparently sings on the new Black Keys record, too.

And if you get a chance to check out the Avett Brothers, don't miss it. I usually get bored with mostly accoustic shows. Not with these guys. Great chops, rEdiculous energy. At their best, it was like The Band meets The Pogues, unplugged, with brotherly harmonies thrown in. Fun stuff.

Well, sort of related, here is a clip from a review in the NYT of some documentary . . .

"In early-1960s Israel pornographic, possibly anti-Semitic novels that detailed sensational tales of the torture and rape of male concentration camp prisoners by curvaceous female Nazi guards rapidly rose from marginal pulp reading to mass-market popularity.

A"ri Libsker’s documentary “Stalags” is named for these pocket-size books, which were written under American pseudonyms in a style that suggested translation. (They were in fact done in Hebrew by Israeli writers, some of whom appear on screen.)"

The original film, Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, is the only film in the series which belongs in the Nazi exploitation genre. It is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. Despite this stated attempt at cultural sensitivity, the film is banned in Germany.

Something about Regina Spektor really bugs me. Not sure what it is.
