Didn't even know it was shut. Or that people call you "Dr. Bill" these days. You must be well chuffed.

Whispers on the street say that Rocky Sullivan's might be coming back to Lexington Avenue. Same scenario: landlord had visions of a trendy boutique and twice the rent and then reality bit.

I am not Dr. Bill, though I used to have his card (it read simply, "Dr. Bill"). He used to eat at the restaurant in my building after his shift. He also tends bar at a place called Twins on 34th. He's quite a character.

fashion query

True true story:

I have been invited to charity Texas Hold Em Poker tournament/party. What is appropriate in-character dress for such a function? (keep in mind I have not played the poker in a private setting since LS nor do I watch poker on TV).

Serious response appreciated.

Torre

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog...3dolney_buster

I'm with Olney on this whole Torre flap. I think he's a huge hypocrite. He knew exactly what he was doing with those quotes. And if you don't believe that, then you can't give him any credit for managing the press so well in New York, because in order to be any good at it you have to be particularly savvy with your quotes. So, was he just lucky then or is he lying his ass off now?

Whatever. This story is bigger than it should be. But finally, people are starting to look at Torre the way I've been looking at him for years. The Yankees made Torre, he did not make the Yankees. He inherited a championship team, right when they peaked (including a great trade for a free agent pitcher) and managed that core through 4 championships. Once the team was completely his (with a record payroll and arguably the best talent in the league), he did the minimum with what he had. He sucked as a manager with the Cardinals and the Mets, which leads me to believe that many an average manager with an even temperment could have done as well as he did. He actively didn't manage in favor of a formula that worked only when Mariano was the set-up man or could go two innings without breaking a sweat as closer. He thought that the salary he was making was a birthright and not a gift from Steinbrenner. And he thought he was too good to be asked to structure his salary with incentives while simultaneously asking his players to do just that. He walked out the door insulted that he would be paid way more than market for succeeding. Now, he talks shit about players to sell books and acts like he was betrayed by Cashman because he didn't get the contract he wanted.

Can you imagine his reaction to a player on his team who did that? Oh, wait. Sheffield, Mondesi, Wells, all were given a quick boot out the door and Torre's disgust. And, mind you, they're not exactly role models. But what does it say about him that he does the exact same thing first chance he gets?

Hypocrite.

If this is a serious question, I think you should emulate either Johnny Chan or Scotty Nguyen. If this is not a serious question, I think you should just go as a douche.

What I read this afternoon -- and I can't recall where -- is that the book is by a journalist who interviewed Torre and many others, and that things in the book that others said are being attributed to Torre.

Actual Fashion Question

I've noticed that a couple pairs of sterling silver cufflinks (that I haven't worn in years) have tarnished. What's the best way to clean them? Plain old silver polish from the supermarket?

Actual Travel Question

For anyone who has been to Vegas recently, how are the rooms at the Palms? I'm in need of a vacation, and room rates in Vegas have taken a nosedive. As I'm no longer a GA, money is a factor, so I won't be getting a suite at the Wynn.

As for dress at the poker table, if the event is at an actual poker room, skip the hooded sweatshirt. Some card rooms don't like the hoodie and sunglasses look as their security cameras become near useless if the player comes in with the hood up. Phil Laak gets a break at the tables because (a) he's a pro, so everyone knows him already, (b) the hoodie is more of a gimmick now, (c) even when he does don the hood, it's usually after he's gone all-in, and (d) he used his Irish charm to pull Jennifer Tilly.

P.S. Don't emulate Phil Helmuth or Scotty Nguyen in dress or in manner at the poker table. Phil's a notorious cad at the tables, though his book Play Poker Like The Pros would be worth a read before the tourney. Scotty Nguyen got drunk at an event last year and behaved like a boor in a televised match.

P.P.S. If you don't already own a cowboy hat, don't even think of wearing one at a poker table.

Sure. I also have a polishing cloth, which I believe builds in a little polish and you can use that to "buff" the links. May not work on heavy tarnish . . . I use it every few weeks and it keeps them shiny.

Got an email from Tiffany and Co. that they are doing free silver cleanings from 2/1 to 2/14. If they are badly tarnished, it wouldn't hurt to have them professionally cleaned.
