Except that they are tagged by date and organized (by iPhoto) in groups, so it's pretty easy to go through them to find things.

It's just postponing the problem. Delete half and you'll be back in six months.
Btw, while you're doing this, buy two harddrives and back up. You're courting disaster with all your photos on a laptop.
