Eternal? Where is that statue today, Bob? Greece couldn't even keep the Parthenon marbles --- they lost them to Scotland after losing another game of For Keeps to the hated Turk.

Somehow I don't like the idea of taking blood and urine samples and freezing them in a bank in case the future provides more accurate testing. It would make every medal awarded provisional. That said, I have a tough time believing anyone in track and field isn't juicing with something.

My wife's US magazine while sitting on the pot going twosies this weekend. Does anyone else hear the theme to the Twillight Zone?

Please tell me that none of us were among the millions who flocked to see that piece of junk, "Without a Paddle."

Perhaps as an indicator of the depths of boredom achieved in the sleepy month of August, WAP brought in over $13 Million this weekend and came in as the #2 movie at the box office.

This, BTW, was the movie for which Burt Reynolds appeared on TDS last week to pimp it, but could not bring himself to utter a word about it, instead deciding to fill the time telling anecdotes about the casting of "Deliverance." From the movie clip they showed, I can imagine why Burt seemed a bit embarrassed.

Fun fact (courtesy of the Defamer ) is that co-leading man Dax Shepard -- who paid his dues starring in Punk'd -- has as his initial screen credit on IMDB as "Vomiter at Party."

What you may also not know is that Mr. Shepard graduated with a degree in Anthropology from UCLA. Imagine that.

'Drama Queen Khorkina Sulks Into Retirement

BIAS ACCUSATIONS

Only three days after describing the winning of her first all-round Olympic medal -- a silver -- as the best day of her life, she was accusing the judges of bias toward American winner Carly Patterson.

"I knew well in advance, even before I stepped on the stage for my first event, that I was going to lose," she was quoted as saying in the Russian media.

"I practically did everything right, still they just set me up and fleeced me."'

__________

What a crazy bitch. I watched her. She looked sloppy and off-balance on the floor exercise and wasn't very good on the balance beam either. She deserved to lose.

Oh, and while looking for a photo of her ugly mug, I found this:

http://english.pravda.ru/images/newsline/khorkina.jpg
[Photo of her topless. Bleh. I'll note that she is one of the gymnasts who doesn't look like a child. But still, bleh.]

TM
Looks like she has a personality to match her face"

Khorkina did not think Patterson was a deserving winner.

"Asked if the American was a worthy opponent, she said: 'I've seen a much tougher opposition than her. Let's see how long she can remain on top. Can she keep going and compete in two more Olympics like myself.'

'No, well, you better write that Patterson is a great champion and she has a great future,' she added sarcastically."

God, what a bitch. I wish she was competing in another event so I could watch her fall again.

The only scoring error that I know about is the South Korean who thinks he won the gold in the men's all-around, though admittedly, the only gymnastics I've watched was the woman's individual all-around and the men's team. Those were fairly clean. There was the non-controversy over Aaron Peirsol's 100 backstroke gold, but that was cleared up almost immediately.

Compared to the cough syrup and vault height fiascos from Sydney's gymnastics, I think this one has gone fairly well.

Question: There appears to be no question that the South Korean's parallel bar routine should have had a higher difficulty score. If the higher score is applied, he wins the all-around on points. Should he get it retroactively?

I don't think so. I think that the competition doesn't really exist in a vacuum, and what happens during the competition impacts the rest of the competition. Some of the other gymnasts may have changed their strategy if they'd known they needed higher scores to beat the South Korean. There were protest mechanisms in place, and I think that the South Koreans missed their opportunity to object.

I do feel badly that there could be an asterisk next to Paul Hamm's medal though. One of the things that has bugged me about these games are all the asterisks. Commentators are constantly blah blah blah record blah blah remember it was set blah blah boycotted games blah blah.

Ok, the other scoring or DQ issues that come to mind are as follows:

Peirsol's last turn in the backstroke--French judge called it illegal. Still being appealed ( I believe). Originally got a DQ, then reinstated gold. Not sure where will end up.

Three Day Eventing (Equestrian) German rider who secured team and individual gold actually crossed the start line twice, was given 14 faults, then protested and had them removed and was reinstated as the winner and then the countries behind her (France, UK and US) protested, and ther faults went back and German rider moved to 8th individually and 4th as a team, moving hte U.S. rider from bronze to silver and team to bronze from 4th.
U.S. gun shooting person who was far in the lead and shoe in for gold aimed at wrong target on last shot and was given no score and lost his medal. Then Russian anorexic girl starts stomping her foot that scoring was fixed for her to lose. Those and Paul Hamm, seem like more issues that usual....but maybe I'm just remembering past Olympics incorrectly.

Excuse me, but "proactive" and "paradigm"? Aren't these just buzzwords that dumb people use to sound important? Not that I'm accusing you of anything like that.

No offense, but you were a pretty sore loser in your fight with Slave last week, so maybe you shouldn't talk.

Although I agree with Korkhina's view that posts should be judged primarily on grace, elegance and beauty rather than simply mechanical mumbling, there's no way I can be compared to her. I have much better legs.

Yes, but I don't think that has anything to do with Jake Gyllenhall.

And Flinty, I had no idea you weighed so much.

Rare twins born to mountain gorillas
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Rwanda - The gorilla glanced suspiciously at the eight approaching humans, then turned her back on them to protect what she was holding. A male as heavy as two shot-putters (!!) emerged from the bushes, sat down about 10 paces from the visitors, and let out a deep growl. The treasure these two rare giants were guarding was a pair of baby twins — only the third ever recorded.

You could have at least congratulated our big friend.

Congrats on the new family members, Flinty!! Fraternal or identical?

Maybe. And the degree of difficulty in fighting Slave is high, but you let Penske get the final spin, and the better exit, which is just several tenths of a point off.

For those who don't follow politics

http://www.lawtalkers.com/voicemessage.wav (spree: foul language, possible defamation of Flinty)

Somehow this ended up on the politics board, but it probably belongs here also. Someone sent me the infamous voice message going around, and I put it up for your listening pleasure.
