Hey RT -- just saw an interview with a passenger on the California cruise ship who said that the crew and passengers only learned about the positive tests when VP Pence announced them on national TV. HIPAA violation?

How much money would you have lost if you had followed this advice on February 28?

The nice thing about this mess is supply siders have no argument to make. The consumer pullback that's coming will only be fixed by providing relief to the little guy.

But that won't stop Wall Street from trying to argue that what we'll need right now is a big ole pile of trickle down emergency measures.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Fed started buying stocks.

Nope, no one involved is a covered entity.

That said, be nice to your friendly neighborhood privacy officer. She's likely whacking moles all over the place while this shit is going down.

It's human nature to want to share information in a crisis like this one (especially when the official sources are so full of shit).

Maybe a new disease needs to be addressed through public health measures instead of financial stimulus. This little guy would be relieved if he thought there were going to be enough ICU beds to go around in a few weeks.

Oh, I totally agree. There ought to be all the emergency money we can muster thrown at expanding hospital capacity to absorb what's coming. I'd take it out of the defense budget to the extent that's possible.

I think we also need to be level-headed in assessing the danger of this thing.

https://slate.com/technology/2020/03...-we-think.html

That oft noted 3.4% death rate is somewhat misleading. Outside Wuhan, that quickly falls to .7. S. Korea has I think a .6 rate.

The old and those with heart and respiratory conditions should be fearful. The rest of us will likely experience a mild flu.

eta: One important difference between this and the flu is that many more people need hospitalization. Parts of Italy are running out of hospital beds and ventilators. Another is that the long-term effects aren't known yet. No one in China has had Covid-19 for more than about two months, so it seems a little premature to talk about how harmless it is for most of us.

Please read this thread about what is happening in Northern Italy and then see if you want to keep comparing this to a mild flu.

If you are old or infirm, yes, it's bad. If you are younger and healthier, it's a flu. If you are between the ages of 1-19, for some reason the disease doesn't impact you aggressively at all.

I understand the overwhelming character of the disease. It's amazingly contagious. But it seems so far to only take out the weakened and the old. Like the flu.

I'm not poo pooing the panic, like Musk. But I'm saying people should educate themselves regarding it. If you're a person like me, in good health and not old, you should not be hoarding supplies that old people may need. It's not a big risk for you and doing that is dickish and dangerous to those at serious risk.

No. Among other things, it requires hospitalization much more than the flu does. And, we have hospital beds to handle the flu, but not to handle a surge of Covid-19 cases.

The hoarding is an expression of the desire to take control over a situation in which one lacks control. It's not rational. And I don't understand why people are hoarding toilet paper. It's a respiratory disease, not a lower GI disease.

Keep them focused on the TP, that way they'll leave the scotch alone.

My dad is 80 and has lung issues.

My dad is also (ironically) a pulmonogist and in 2003 literally wrote the protocol at his hospital on how to manage SARS, which has a similar pathology. He knows that he doesn't get a ventilator when the hard decisions are being made.

I'm taking this shit really seriously, and fortunately, most of the medical center here is too.

Agreed. Back when I was fighting stage 4 cancer, my whole family became hand-washing fanatics. During the nearly two and half year period when I was immune suppressed, with five members of the household, there was a single cold (during which I moved into a hotel). This can be done. Wash those hands!!!

Fortunately, he lives at the ranch and doesn't have contact with too many people when he's there. He came into town this weekend for a birthday party and he was around some people, but it was pretty limited. Next week is a public event that he's volunteering for, but I think we can make sure he doesn't touch anyone. Also, I have some tamiflu from last year, and there is some indication that the anti-virals are effective. He knows more than most how these things work, so I'm not that worried, but he's also made it clear that we have to keep this thing away from him.
