 | Agreed.

Does the admissions office know about this practice or care? My mom worked in admissions at a school where one of the coaches did something similar--basically way over-recruited numbers. It wasn't 10 for 0, but, say 50 for 20 spaces (football). It took a couple of years, but the admissions office caught on and basically stopped giving recruits a break in the admissions process. The practice quickly changed--the coach learned to figure out who the 20 he really wanted were.

My first thoughts were that: (1) it was reasonable to have thought she had left - me and my friends do it all the time (although we are men); (2) the girlfriends were likely drunk and shouldn't drive back to the club; and (3) if they were drunk, the same applied to driving to the hospital to sit shiva.

I'm not exactly a bar fly either so maybe that's a factor. I also wouldn't likely drink enough to be rendered ineffective if I got a call at 4 am from the same friend who needed to be picked up at the hospital. I don't think the issue was holding the letter-writer's hand in the ER but rather that the hospital wouldn't just release her without someone else to drive her home.

 | YW! I'm certain it is the right choice. I hope you did not go with the Barbour bucket hat on dtb's advice, though. Nothing wrong with the hat, but just for fun, go to www.barbour.com . When the first splash page comes up, see how many things you can spot that make you seethe with misanthropic rage before the second splash page (the one with the bizarre Anglophile motorcycle club) replaces it. I counted ten!
