Then my best guess is that the Pats wanted to put Cassel into the worst possible situation, instead of one he could be reasonably expected to succeed in. No one can accuse Belicheck (or the Pats front office) of being concerned about the best interests of players who want off his team.

There is little that seems more painful in the world of sports than being a Lions fan.
Good news, though, Ferrote may end up on the market. Seems like a natural fit for the Lions.

When we got Schaub from Atlanta, we made sure that he had a lot of years on his contract left. Cassel will have at most one.

He plays this year at the franchise level, and KC could use the franchise tag next year if he doesn't agree to a long term deal.

I'd be surprised if the Pats care about that. I thought there weren't a lot of teams he could go to because of the salary cap.

A few talking heads actually have suggested that Belicjeck was trying to do both Pioli and Cassell a favor.

Hmm. I looked on the internet and it seems she has relocated to SF. Doesn't seem to have a day job other than "personal appearances". Maybe she'll make one at your firm. In a bikini.

Reality TV train wreck
I stopped watching The Bachelor a long time ago but read the finale to this one would be particularly nasty. If anyone goes on that show expecting to have a happily ever after, they've not been paying attention. But it seems that usually they have "the most romantic rose ceremony ever!" and then a few months after the show there is a little blurb about them breaking up.
I waited to watch until the end of the finale to catch the "dump one/propose to the other" ending. It almost made me wish I'd watched so I'd have an opinion on him and the women. The one he dumped was less broken hearted than expected but kept saying he had made a mistake and was going to get hurt. But the guy comes back from dumping her and gets all weepy about it. Sheesh. The "winner" was suitably excited.
In the "After the Final Rose" special, the bachelor dumped the "fiance" and asked the former dumpee if she wants him back. It would have been better if the "fiance" he dumped had slapped him or something and the former dumpee had told him to get lost. Sadly the 1st one did nothing more than call him a bastard and the 2nd one seemed all too happy to take him back. At least for a couple months until there is a little blurb about them breaking up.
The big debate is whether the producers planned and scripted the whole thing. I'm cynical and think yes. Still doesn't save a dopey show. Won't watch the next one unless I hear about more train wreck.

Sending Cassell to KC is a "favor" to him? What, the only other option was Detroit?

I assume it's scripted too, but I have to admit it's realistic, because it bears a striking resemblance to the story of how I wound up in a gas station bathroom with Hank's mom. Except I don't pay for roses.

(a) Cassell was franchised and accepted the tender from NE. So he will make $14mm + this year. If he and KC don't work out a long-term deal this year, he'll be an unrestricted free agent next year and able to go elsewhere (unless franchised again).
(b) The new KC GM is the guy who scouted and helped draft Cassell -- knows his value and wanted him. He will get a chance to start in KC -- which he would not have had in NE. So, yeah, I'd say that is a favor. Players like to play.
(c) As Ty noted, how many other teams had a starting job for him plus almost $15mm available to spend on a QB this season? Detroit and KC and . . . ? None of them were championship ready.

Plus, not sure what other options there are. Teams in need of a QB generally are not good teams. And there are some teams (hi Icky!) that just weren't going to get Cassel from the Pats.
