God decreed a potato chip is a union of a fried potato slice and salt. Not a potato and some unnatural spices.

Lest anyone think that cancer is the only affliction that needs fucking (surely no one does), a friend and colleague of the wife, a survivor of childhood cancer and public health advocate, caught the flu several weeks ago. A day after visiting her doctor and getting a chest x-ray, she called a friend for help because her husband was out of the country. The friend could not take her to the hospital because she could no longer walk. The ambulance led to a diagnosis of double pneumonia and dependence on machines to breathe, which still proved inadequate, leading to the amputation of her left leg above the knee. She's still in the hospital although now seems headed for as full a recovery as one can make after an amputation resulting from the frickin flu.

Happy Saturday!
The flu has been killing a lot of people this year. Ms. Slothrop has first-hand experience with this, and says to get your flu shot. Last year was not so bad, so she thinks many people skipped it this year.

I should have added, it's killing a lot of otherwise healthy 30-, 40- and 50-year-olds.

If it's what I had two weeks ago, I understand how this could kill a person. The thing was short (12 hours), but during its peak probably the worst sickness I have ever endured. Shivers/sweats/extreme fever/inability to sleep/nausea for about seven hours, followed by a five or so hours of fatigue.

I rode it out sans meds, but family members who also had it related that even with meds, the thing was unbearable.

And then, the next day, it's gone -- disappears like food poisoning. I went running less than ten hours after it ended.

And that lesson would be, you can't "top the joke" to save your life.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your colleague. That's horrible.

It's H1N1 that is killing people. I have never been so sick in my life, and it was weeks before I was better.

I had something just like that in February, the day before I had plans to go out to celebrate my birthday. I think it was flu even though at the time it felt like food poisoning. Others in my office had it much worse (longer duration)...
