Playmobil stopaction video of Joy Division's "Transmission." As a video, it is enjoyable. What impresses is the devotion to be certain enough that it was a good idea to continue to work through all the countless hours.

Has anyone been to Machu Picchu? Is it crazy to try to do it with kids?

A friend went this year with his wife and kids, 10, 7 and 5. It resulted in a lot of experiences that made for hilarious retellings and lifelong memories, but some of which were deeply unpleasant as experienced. My favorite part of the story was when the family left their passports in the charter van and had to repurchase them from the driver's brother. The negotiations were handled by Bobby, age 10, because it was time for the Spanish immersion school to pay dividends. As the story goes Bobby handled it beautifully, because a 10 year old is perhaps uniquely capable of parting with $300 without ever saying "This is fucking extortion!" and potentially offending the blackmailer.

One of the (100 or so) places on my short list. Go and tell us about it. I need a canary for that coal mine.

there is a "fuck you" attitude that a rich american often needs in the poorer countries to not feel the fool that does get tougher to pull off with kids- still if you put aside your pride and assume you'll get cheated a bit- and hang on to your fucking passports for god's sakes- it can be great (never been there just the basic idea of that sort travel)

Translation: It may be okay to go with kids, but not if the parents are so incredibly stupid as to leave the family's passports in a van.

Well, there's that, but my friend is sort of a blithe spirit and that kind of thing is not uncommon in his life. By now I'm sure he's rationalized that all the other players in the story needed the money more than he did, and that $300 is a small price to pay for a story that gets big laughs at cocktail parties. But yeah.
