So obvious as to be mistaken for an Onion headline.

Associates Giving Up On Partnership

Quote:
Covington & Burling hiring partner Mark Plotkin says the firm's lawyers describe making partner as winning "a pie-eating contest where the prize is more pie."
Associates join firms to make money in the short term, and don't really expect that some magic day they'll be made partners? I never would have thought of that! Oh, wait. Yes, I would. And so did many others before.

That joke is as old as my grandmother's dinosaur. (Well, at the very least, it's unoriginal.) Heard it years (YEARS, I tell you) ago.

Covington is an old line white shoes firm. before it make an official humorous observation, it wants to make sure the observation has withstood the test of time.

Carr & Farrell Update

This morning we received a complaint about a post on SF/SV about Carr & Ferrell from the firm.

Seems that just deleting information from SB was not enough, so they decided to request deletion here of this post http://www.lawtalkers.com/forums/sho...6358#post36358

From Leagl's SF/SV post, this was our response:

We can appreciate as [title redacted] for Carr and Ferrell you would find the post to which you refer distressing. LawTalkers however does not control content and we do not delete postings of our users merely for being offensive.

However, we will let the posters know of your distress, and if the poster wishes to change it, that person of course may do so.

With our regards,

LawTalkers

Edited to add for the acronym impaired (and you know who you are):

SB = Stalin Board, Infirm, etc.

P.S. Please get a life.

From the amount of time they spend policing message boards, I would surmise that business at Carr & Farrell must not be very good right now.

New Mod

I mentioned it on the Florida board but I thought I should mention in here.

A poster by the name of LitiGator came to my attention recently because she has been trying to get some posting going on on the Florida board.

I approached her to find out a little bit more, and learned that though she signed up a few months ago she has been lurking for years. And as it turns out she is known quite well to some of our colleagues here on the LT.

With their reccomendations it was easy for me to make the decision to add her as Moderator to the Florida board.

Thanks for making the effort LitiGator, and by the way, cute avatar.

Now that we are settled pretty well here on LawTalkers we are interested in trying to up the content on the regional boards. If you are interested in helping out with a board that doesn't have a moderator or just seems very low traffic, please feel free to let me know.

PMs and Avatars

Please note we've upped the number of PMs you can store. You now can have 40.

As far as Avatars, there didn't seem to be a true consensus, but overall it seemed people liked the idea of making them a tad bigger.

So now, Avatars can be as large as 120 X 120.

No Profit Before Honour?

Intriguing concept!

http://www.thelawyer.com/cgi-bin/ite...d=11&h=24&f=46

"In a dramatic turnaround, White & Case has lost its case against Hong Kong firm Deacons over a team of star insolvency partners the US firm recruited in summer 2002.

When White & Case poached rated Deacons partners Mark Fairbairn and Edward Cairns, Deacons hit back with a Hong Kong lawsuit claiming the two were in breach of their partnership covenants and that White & Case had encouraged the pair to break them.

The judge said White & Case's conduct, "amounts to a cynical disregard for the rights of Deacons, putting profit before honour, it is below the belt."'

From the article:
Partnership agreements frequently do not directly address the issue, he said, though he noted that some expressly forbid partners from engaging in any moneymaking venture apart from practicing law at the firm.
Can I rely on this in telling them that I don't want to buy their kid's fucking band candy or Girl Scout cookies? If so, can we please make the secretaries partners ASAP?
