And Minnesota Public Radio is devoting all its programming right now to Prince. It would truly be hard to overestimate the influence he had over this community and the love this community has for him.

I was just listening to a live show from Miami in 1985: http://www.panicstream.net/vault/pri...1985-miami-fl/
I may switch to the current next; thanks.

1981 My college roommate turned me on to this DJ, The Electrifying Mojo. We'd sit on our balcony and I think we had to point the radio antenna towards Detroit (this was in East Lansing). I was punk and reggae but Mojo's show turned me on to funk and all kinds of, well, everything. One night this song comes on and it's great, but then the most sexist line ever, over and over, "count your pussy," like he was suggesting I count the number of sexual partners I'd been with. The song earlier had the singer admitting people say he was rude so I guess it made sense. It wasn't until a few days later I learned the song was from this new singer, and the line was actually the single word "Controversy." RIP

Me either, but my husband worked one of his tours. We'd heard rumors that he was going to do an all Hendrix set at the Isle of Wight festival this year and if that happened we were going to try to go.
Graham's remembrance:
Quote:
I worked for many many artists and entertainers in my 20+ years behind the scenes. Prince was, by far, the most infuriating, narcissistic, diva-like pain in the ass to deal with. He was also, without question, the most gifted, talented and brilliant musician I have ever seen. His performances were transcendent. His skill on the guitar was at a level most people didn't really appreciate given his skill at blending it with the whole of a song. I will stand by my opinion that Prince was the best living guitar player on earth. He could bring the funk like no other. There's a reason George Clinton covered his music frequently. I could never figure out the personality off stage but on stage and on his recordings, there was few who matched his talent in the last 25 years. I hope his estate will release the vaulted music and will finally relent on the restrictive control of his videos and music, if for no other reason so that future generations will know what an amazing talent there was in that very very diminutive frame. Rest well PRN, thanks for the music.

They are shutting down the major downtown street in front of First Avenue tonight for a spontaneous dance party with many of the best local up and coming soul, R&B and hip hop talent. Because it's fucking Prince.

The Current doubled their streaming server capacity for their Prince tribute. I'm pretty sure Mary Lucia was in tears when she signed off.

I can only imagine what it's like there. Numbers, our club that's seen pretty much everyone, had lines around the block when Bowie died for their usual Friday night dance night. Tomorrow they're showing Purple Rain at 8:30 with no cover. I imagine it'll progress into craziness pretty soon.

After the block party, the dance party moves inside First Avenue for a free all night dance party which ends at 7:00 a.m. And the starts up again tomorrow night and goes all night again. And again on Saturday.

And my other memory. I was at the D airport, in the Northwest Worldclub. There is a commotion as a few people come in and are escorted to a conference room. There is a beautiful woman, this short guy who I kind of recognize, but can't place- he is wearing sweats and has his eyes down, and then A 6' 6" body guard with large heavy walking stick, a shaved head and wearing a 3 piece purple suit. I googled "prince's tour schedule" and he was in town the night before. The man wanted to pretend he didn't want to be recognized, but he did want to be recognized. Otherwise you hire a 6' bodyguard and have him dress down.

Graham was cleaning the stage at the Irwin Center while the New Power Generation was doing their sound check before a show, and he was sort of dancing along while he was sweeping up because, as he puts it, you couldn't not dance to the funk they were dropping. Prince had a "no local stage hands on premises when I'm here"* rule, and ordered a security guard to kick Graham off the stage when he got there. The security guard had instructed Graham that he wasn't allowed to even look in Prince's direction as he walked him off of the stage. Graham yelled something snarky and left. Graham sneaked back in to watch the show. Afterwards, during load out, he ran into the security guard again, who said "hey, you got a smirk out of him. He still wanted me to kill you, but you got him to smile." Graham said he may have addressed Prince by his given last name as he left. Later in the same tour, Prince did a New Year's show here in Houston and worked with the keyboard tech to put together a plexiglass leslie hammond b3, and he said that was one of the cooler experiences. At that show, he avoided any interaction with Prince like the plague.
He says of all of the hundreds of performers/musicians he's ever worked for/with Prince was the most talented and the most diva/asshole/pain-in-the-ass.
*Local stage hands were supposed to work invisibility magic around a schedule that didn't exist. They were also supposed to hide during the show so Prince couldn't see them. They weren't allowed to interact in any way, shape or form with Prince.

Music belongs on this board floer you great git!
So it seems the wailing on FB for Prince doubles that Bowie got. Is it because the collective pain after Bowie? Like okay this is too much. Or we knew Bowie was ill but Prince's death came from nowhere?
Or was he more important? To me Bowie was a God since about 73 or so. I loved Prince (although Under The Cherry Moon might be the worst movie ever), but Bowie was a step above. Yes? No?
