Actually, the term alumni probably means "alumni association" because the school is too cheap to print separate bags saying "alumnus" or"alumna."

Alumni is fine for mixed gender plurals because the masculine embraces the feminine. My wife the Latinist has no objection to belonging to our alumni association. Alumni-slash-ae is an abomination, particularly since alumni is pronounced ah-loom-NEE and alumnae is pronounced ah-loom-NIGH, making the -ae ending sound too much like what people usually say for the -i ending.
