I think a very significant majority gave up months and months ago. I have meetings and dinners with immunosuppressed friends and clients. I’ll usually ask in advance if they desire distancing, masks, etc. They're the ones hugging people the most!

God only knows how many times the damn thing has cycled thru me at this point. I’m not obsessing over it. I’ll continue to be respectful. You want me masked? Fine. Happy to do so upon request. But in a world where no one is wearing masks, and therefore my wearing one won’t make a difference, unless requested, I’ll just go with the flow.

WTF else am I supposed to do? Engage in a futile gesture?

It didn't play out that way, with over a third of the office being out for at least a week or two. There are now tumbleweeds blowing through the hallways and finding people to get stuff done is almost impossible.

Oops.
Just wait until 2/3 quit. And the other 1/3 come in with Covid unmasked.

PM.

We have a pair of doves that sit together on a branch right over the chairs on the patio. Occasionally they'll screw. There is shit all over that part of the patio.

They are messy. I have about 6 or 7 that sit under the bird feeder (they don't have the ability to sit at it) and eat fallen scraps. When I open the door, they scatter, and sometimes fly into the window but they are close enough that they don't hurt themselves. But I am always hosing the porch 2-3 times a day.

Whatever. Had we locked down like China in the beginning, many lives would have been saved and it wouldn't have needed to be all that long.

But we might have then had subpar vaccine development/uptake, like China, so maybe we wouldn't have been better off on net.

I don't know if anyone got the balance right (Korea? Vietnam?), but I'm quite sure we didn't try hard enough.

As I said before, not defending every single thing China has done, just saying that they took it seriously early in ways that were successful (see also Australia, New Zealand) while it was spreading uncontrolled around most of the rest of the world.

Yeah, and it used to be more. But "mandates don't work."

Your wearing one when you're sharing air with strangers whose health/vaccination status you don't know isn't futile, it gives some measure of protection to those friends who are trusting you not to get them sick. (Non-sarcastic) props for being respectful, though.

How was it successful when people in Shanghai can’t leave their apartments, then they can for a week, then they can’t for a month?

I believe Australia is still off limits for foreign tourists. And they have a strong tourist economy. Successful?

Tens or hundreds of millions of people didn't die because China stopped community transmission while it was rampant around the world. None of that is about Shanghai, although Shanghai might not have happened had the rest of the world not completely failed (or had China developed a more effective vaccine or more successfully deployed it).

Weird, though, that China criticism is about lockdowns and not failure to vaccinate everyone.

They reopened and their case rate is 6x ours per capita. Deaths are low still. All about the vax.

China failed to vaccinate everyone? Detroit’s rate is still around 40%.

BTW, you said this the other day, and it's wrong. For example, one of the Omicron variants hitting people now goes after the lungs much more than original Omicron did.

One of my partners has now been hospitalized with it for three weeks. Not clear he'll make it.
