You may be remembering that I'm really into Cutty Sark, the Sweeney Sisters and chicks named Moira.

Sometimes criminal defense attorneys have to put on a show for their clients where they rail away at the injustices of the state. That's the difference between true believers and pragmatists. The lawyer in my example was a pragmatist and wanted the client to feel like they had earned their money. When the prosecutor, the defense attorney, and the judge are all versed in the criminal system, then things can work smoothly in these situations. The prosecutor doesn't have a conniption about how all criminal defense lawyers are scum. The judge realizes what's going on and doesn't slam either side, provided the rhetoric doesn't get too heated.

The problem lies when you have a true believer on either side. If the defense attorney doesn't realize that em's clients often lie to em, then you'll have a problem. If the prosecutor has never read a police report, shook em's head, and wanted to talk to an officer's sergeant, then you'll have a problem. If a judge has spent all of em's time in civil practice, both as a lawyer and as a judge, then both sides will have problems.

As for why I thought of bruising from a forced blood draw while reading those posts, I can't speak to the boolean search capacities of my mind, but when I think bruising, female defendant, DUI, and allegations of police brutality, the particular case I handled comes to mind. Obviously, the woman in that video Diane Keaton posted didn't get those bruises around her eye from anything that was proper police procedure. That cop got pissed off and jacked her up.

Knock Knock Knock

Is there anyone else who is underwhelmed by the new Portishead album? I haven't heard the whole thing, but I can't say that what I've heard demands repeat listening.

Can't You Hear Me Knocking?

Am I the only one that thinks that this myspace video with John Cusack and Diablo Cody shouldn't have ended until one of them threw the other on the table and they had their way with each other? Only me? Err, ok. Never mind. I'm just saying, with the next extra-special DVD version of Juno, they could add that to the "special unrated features" disk, and I would buy it.

I, as everyone knows, have a lot of free time yet I blame you for linking me to that abortion of an interview. You put NFH to shame.
