I don't believe you. I don't even think you believe you. But good luck anyway.

Be careful here. The term date rape is often used as an excuse to minimize premeditated violent criminal acts because they happen between two people who know each other. Do we play down a knifing because it occurred between two people who knew each other? Oh, that was a date knifing, no big deal.

That's an interesting response. You're assuming that admitting the sexual component of the crime is somehow down playing it. Why?

I'm saying there may be less rape here than in Iran because fewer Americans would view any sexual contact as degrading. Thus someone seeking to degrade may be less likely to use sex to achieve it.

I have no idea if the numbers back that up. Obviously, there are many other factors in play too.

But you're removing the effect on the woman from the equation.
No, I'm highlighting it.

Once again, in this case, they didn't even have sex with this girl.
This would be a cogent point (well, would have been the first of the 17 times it was mentioned) if we were having a conversation only about this case. I would have thought most readers would have figured out by now that that isn't the conversation we are having.

I said it's easier and less risky to find sex elsewhere than it is to rape someone.
I believe that's true for you. I do not believe that's necessarily true, or, more importantly believed by the potential rapist to be true, for those most likely to rape.

I have a theory that if people would just admit thurgreed is right once in a while, all this arguing would end. But unfortunately we live on a board where it's seen as bad to be shown as wrong, so no one can ever agree with him.

I don't assume a date rape is any less about power or more about sex than any other rape. Indeed, it may be less about sex in many ways.

Nor should one even assume "date rapes" are a meaningful category. What separates them from other rapes? They can be as violent, they can be as sudden, weapons can be used (indeed, I've seen statistics saying weapons are used MORE often when it involves two parties who knew each other), perhaps the only unifying thing about the category is that even fewer rapists get convicted when the parties knew each other beforehand, in part because people make false assumptions about date rape.

Your theory is wrong. In fact, it is silmultaneously the most ridiculous and the feeblest attempt at logical thought that this board has seen in twenty five years.

I agree with PLF. He's completely right, as always.

After much debate, I have decided your comprehension problem is bigger than your communication problem.

You've never known people who had a desire to exert power over those close to them? Really? Can't imagine it? Perhaps re-read a bit of Austen or Tennessee Williams or almost anyone other than a romance novelist to get an idea of what can happen between men and women that really doesn't have much to do with sex.

Does that qualify as a shoot-the-messenger reply?

TM

I have ejaculated many things, but never that male on male rape was not as loathsome as male on female rape (or, to make sure all my bases are covered for you, female on female rape*).

Your confusing my saying male on female rape is a unique crime, in that it can only involve a man and a woman, with me saying it is worse than male on male rape is a comprehension problem. My Thesaurus doesn't show "more grievous" or "worse" as a synonym for "unique."

There were far dumber things written here during Reagan's first term.
