I hate the pledge drives. Fucking hate them. The pings and the Jerry Lewis telethon structure of the things are beyond grating. They could do much better with a constant, low key drive instead of that quarterly 24/7-sprint-to-economic-goal model.

The ombudsman certainly was unimpressed with the method of firing, but I don't think she disagreed that he was a problem for listeners.

I absolutely hate pledge drives. I was hoping that the idea of the sustaining membership would help ween my affiliate away from them, but I fear that two and a half weeks of my driving to and from work will have to be spent listening to something else every year.

I like Tom Scocca's take. In part:

Who loses here? NPR gets rid of Williams, which it always wanted to do. Maybe it loses some funding for being so un-American, and Archer Daniels Midland will have to come back and help out. Williams gets $2 million and becomes a prize martyr for Fox News. Fox News has something to yell about. Howard Kurtz has something to offer evenhanded semi-opinions about. I get a blog post at the end of a long day. Why did Williams get fired so fast? Because everyone was having such a good time.

He is my new favorite blogger.

Think that .5% might overstate it. Most of them just know how to build equations in excel.

The guys who make it to the top generally just pay someone else (eg, guys with Physics PhD) to do the heavy math for them anyway. And those guys are mostly marginalized at the bigger shops.

Having an ombudsman is ridiculous and faddish -- from circa 1995.

Not having a pledge drive is unsustainable over a long term. The desire of non-profits is the same as the desire of for-profits -- to grow revenue. The only difference between them is the reason why.

I'm on the board of two non-profits, and I work for an organization that relies heavily on philanthropic donations. I understand the need to harrass people for donations. Doesn't mean I like it much. I prefer to be on any but the fundraising committee.

Unrelated, but interesting, one of Clarence Thomas's former girlfriends is shopping a book, and his boneheaded wife gave reporters a reason to talk to the girlfriend. Thomas isn't going to come out looking all that good.

From what I can tell the only "scandal" is that he likes tits and porn. I would be more bothered if he didn't.

Why would that bother you?

It's the way he imported it into work that makes him look bad. I've never asked one of my employee's their bra size - have you?

That said, it just makes him look bad. He's got the job, nothing here is anything but embarassing. He comes across as a clod, and not terribly bright or hard working - more like a Senator than a Supreme Court Appointee.

Re your first paragraph, if he is straight, he should like tits and porn. If he is gay, he should not be lying about liking tits and porn.

Your other two paragraphs are irrelevant to the subject - the alleged new revelations contained in a former girlfriend's book.

Based on prior posts here, for at least one employee, you didn't have to.

I'd guess 35 or 36 C. Maybe D. Do you think I should ask and see how close my guess is?

No, but telling her that you discussed it on the intertubez seems like a capital idea. Perhaps you can wangle a deal with Fox, or a supreme court nomination out of it.

Yeah, I know. Lawyers are stupid because we hate our lives and don't get paid like I-bankers. We could all be making much more money doing something we found endlessly more rewarding. Just look at you! You managed to escape to something so much more rewarding in every conceivable way.

Whatever. There are thousands of different reasons why lawyers stick with this crap (feel free to call me to discuss mine). The funny thing is, you know this. So your not-so-subtle point (and I think it is hilarious you felt you needed to mention again) is really just garbage. The fact that you're trying to characterize the decisions we make as being based on stupidity really just makes me want to ignore you.

TM

As usual you are right, probably because you are smarter than me. My experiences or what I have read is anecdotal and should be discounted.

And Johns Hopkins has never done a study showing that law ranks at the top of more than 100 professions in its rate of depression, at a rate of 4 times the norm.

And the ABA has not done studies detailing rampant job dissatisfaction in the legal profession at rates measurably higher than other professions.

And the American Lawyer didn't recently do a survey showing associate job satisfaction is at a two decade low.

Et al.

Etc. etc.

Nope. You're right. No issues. You win.
