For over two weeks now, people around here have been going a little insane over Lois. Lois is six years old, and resides at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. In early July, it looked like Lois was going to bloom, and the frenzy began.

Lois is a Corpse Flower. Apparently they smell like rotting flesh when in full bloom. And apparently, only 26 have bloomed in the US. Another one is set to bloom somewhere in Minnesota.

At first, it was a few newspaper articles. Then a Twitter feed. Then a webcam. Facebook page. ETC. Then the museum started staying open 24 hours so people could go over and check out the exact moment she bloomed. #corpseflower became a trending topic on Twitter. The horticulturalist at the museum became a mini celebrity.

And then she lingered. For days. The museum started the "she's about to bloom" hype right after the fourth of July. And the longer this thing has been going on, the more people have hopped into the frenzy. Sure, there's been Skepticism and thumb twiddling and parody. But by and large, it's been pretty much build up.

So last night or this morning or at some point in the last 24 hours or so, the museum hit payoff.

And now that the plant is in full stink, the lines are even longer than they were when she was in the tease phase.

This is a weird town.

So when are you going?

I looked at the webcam while a dessicated senior partner walked by. I think I got it.

Funny, but the line is actually "Fuckin' magnets, how do they work?" The sign kind of ruins the poetry of the original.

Minnesotans are gullible

I routinely fall for the pranks my next door neighbor pulls on me, but even though I am too gullible, I figure things out before too long.

This family may be the ultimate gullible saps. Hit men hired by Wal-Mart? I've heard they take a scorched earth approach to litigation but that would be going too far even for Wally World.

No offence but its the Scandanavian thing. I see it in Seattle. They all take things very literally, and have limited ability to see nuanced humor. Its why Seattle is a humourless place. The best description of Seattle that I have seen comes from last year's comedy edition of GQ re: funny cities:

"New York is funny, though not as funny as it thinks it is. The South is funny, despite Jeff Foxworthy. (Rednecks and racism? That covers about half the history of comedy right there.) I'll bet Phoenix is funny, but I hope I never find out. But you know what's not funny? San Francisco. Talking earnestly about couples yoga or sustainable resource management just isn't funny. It is true that gay men are funny. But San Francisco, in its character, is more of a lesbian. And whatever Rosie says, lesbians aren't funny. They're mad, and they want to be listened to. And you know who's a bigger lesbian than San Francisco? You know what you'd get if you took San Francisco and squeezed out the residue of humor? Seattle. It's rainy and progressive and almost kind of European. It's Norway on the Pacific. Norwegians should design wind farms and plan the health care system, but they may not roast people at the Friars Club. Seattle is famous for "fringe" theatre and "artisanal" coffee roasters, and if there's a better way to make something not funny than to put the words "fringe" and "artisanal" in front of it, I don't know what it is. Seattle might be a great city for a WTO demonstration, but going out for beers afterward would be sadder than the tear gas. Seattle, you can babysit our kids, you can help us start our compost program, but please, please don't come up to us at happy hour. We're just trying to have a good time."

As my retirement progresses, I have divested myself of an active interest in the Tour, and, iyrc, I was the driver behind the Podium Girl posts. OTOH, as my retirement progresses my interest in sexy continental gals has increased, so maybe next year I need to reexamine my interest in the Tour.

OTTH, while I do not think he should be stripped of his medals or titles or whatever the Tour gives its winners, I look forward to seeing Lance getting spanked in the continuing investigation. Does anyone still think he was clean?

He's supposed to be racing in Leadville again this year. Apparently his goal is to break 6 hours, which is 28 minutes off of last year's record.

In related news, this week is the peak of my trainer's, er, training for Leadville and he has vowed to kill us all in the time trial spin class tonight. I may not be around tomorrow.

As clean as everyone else. He deserves to keep his prize because he was better organized and didn't use the blood bags containing blood with testosterone (hi, Floyd) or someone else's blood (hi, Tyler).

I think Lance would have a good shot to win Leadville clean. they say he is going to do Hawaii in 2011. I don't think he will win that one.

I agree with that.It was an even playing field. I have long advocated that cycling should just accept that people dope and stop policing it.

By people I mean everyone at the Tour.
